Re: 412 rear springs

Oh...wait... I think only one of my springs may be broken. Apparently, type IV springs are only flattened on the top, and on the bottom they are just cut without having the bottom coil ground flat? Im not sure what the correct technical term for flattening is, but im sure you know what I mean. As so...

412 rear springs

Dammit, you can just tell from my posts that Im taking my whole car apart and finding more and more things wrong with it. I took the rear wishbones out (remembering to mark the cam bolts before taking them out). The wishbones looked OK. I de-rusted them and painted them with anti-rust paint, The sho...

Re: 412 steering damper

Hmm, well, a beetle is one thing, and the overweight Type IV with it's over-stressed vibration-prone steering system is quiet another. Plus, I am determined for this car to be perfect. If i just wanted to botch it up I would have done so in 2 weeks. Instead I ended up pretty much pulling it complete...

Re: 412 rear bearings and CV boots

Well, its definitely the same CV. I don't know about numbers, but they are physically identical. I guess its quiet common for VW to label things different numbers according to what it was produced for. I took the rear wishbone off and cleaned everything up, and the bearings are definitely worn. Ther...

Re: 412 rear bearings and CV boots

Well, i had a bad day. All the drive-shaft bolts came undone, apart from ONE which absolutely totally refused to budge. There is always one isnt there? I tried hammering in a bigger splined bit, but that just stripped the bolt. So, I tried hammering in an even bigger Torx bit (since a Torx bit will ...

412 rear bearings and CV boots

I figured, since I need to replace the wheel bearings of my 412 on one side, and I stripped down most of the car already anyway, I might as well take the rear axle apart completely and clean/paint everything, and while I am there change the CV boots, just to save doing it in the future. Does anybody...

Re: curing 412 wheel wobble

Hmm...so the original looks like this?: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v405/adibrook/ORIG.gif And we know that this part is over-stressed and wears alot, right? What if somebody was to completely get rid of the bushes, and fit ball bearings instead? A Just off the top of my head, something like t...

Re: curing 412 wheel wobble

Hmm, that's interesting. Iv never come across that before. Mine had grease caps and were packed with grease, like ball joints. Are they supposed to be like that? I can't feel any play with them, even under load from a socket and a bar acting as a lever, so i assume they are fine. How are they made? ...

Re: curing 412 wheel wobble

Hmm, sorry to drag an old thread up, but I just stripped down my front suspension/steering, and I dont understand, what are these center link bushes that people have been talking about? The center link is just a bar, with holes for the track rods, a hole for the steering damper, and a two wierd thin...

Re: Strut top bearings

Hmm, could be an idea then, if all else fails. Ill repack them with nylon-friendly grease tomorrow and reassemble the whole thing and see how it goes, if there is no slack and it turns smoothly and not rough maybe i should leave it alone? I have enough things to get on with as it is. By the way, do ...

Re: Strut top bearings

Well, i guess first i have to figure out if mine are serviceable or not. They seem to work OK when assembled, but it just concerns me that they are loose when disassembled! I think i have symmetrical ones. Will super-beetle ones just fit straight on assuming I drill new holes? So its literally just ...

Strut top bearings

I took the struts from my 411 out apart for cleaning etc, and the top bearings seem pretty wierd. They have a nylon bush and two inner races held together the nylon bush I guess. They seemed a little loose, with a bit of play felt in them, but if i tightened the strut nut they tightened up, but i to...

Re: Got any dead fuel level senders? They may be fixable!

Well, i was actually investigating the wire myself. I think the general consensus at the moment is that its NOT nichrome! Nichrome does not like soldering at all, but this stuff solders reasonably nicely. Got a couple of wire suppliers who might be able to get a match assuming I can get a sample fro...

Got any dead fuel level senders? They may be fixable!

It just occurred to me that Type III fuel senders are almost unobtainable, and Type IV ones are pretty much totally unobtainable, and if you find some they cost alot. Having just rebuilt my Type IV sender, and having had this problem before, it just occurred to me that maybe alot of people consider ...

Re: 412 steering damper

This just keeps getting better and better. Now that I took half of my car apart to get the fuel tank out, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that all the ball joints and bushes and linkages seem fine! The bad news is the steering damper is completely shot. T4D dont have any, and neith...

Re: 412 fuel tank removal.

Well, i guess there is no alternative to acid-dipping. There is no way phosphoric acid based 'rust killer' type products will eat into rust this thick. It only penetrates less then 0.5mm of clean surface rust, so it won't do much to 6mm of fuel-soaked rust! Steam cleaning i fear won't do much either...

Re: 412 fuel tank removal.

Well, I finally got the damn tank out! What a horrible horrible job. The tank was very tight, but after taking the steering linkages out complete with box all in one lump, then took the fuel pump off, and after alot of kicking and swearing the fuel tank finally came out! I think my tank is pretty ba...

Re: 412 fuel tank removal.

Hmm, well, maybe its just an unnecessary thing that seemed like a good idea to them. There is also alot of spelling errors and mis-prints in it. And also, the author seems to show more emotion then normally, calling the type iv ''a truly happy car'' in the into section, and making some ironic/cynica...

412 steering damper

The parts interchangeability list shows the steering damper bush to be the same as beetle, but it does not say anything about the damper itself.

Is the damper itself also the same as the beetle, or is it a unique Type IV part?

Re: 412 fuel tank removal.

If you undo the two bolts holding the brake callipers, then you don't even need to disturb the brake lines and don't need to bleed them again afterwards. 412 fuel tank removal.

I need to pull the fuel tank out of my 412, as its full of rust/caramelized fuel/various debris. I just KNOW that no matter how much I flush it through etc, it will just block up with debris. So, I decided that since the car is on stands anyway with no wheels, and I had half the front suspension apa...
