I too think its just the 1 pipe collapse, I've had it before on my bay. But if 1 has gone the others wont be far behind.

I have been looking around for new front shocks and its becoming a bit confusing!

Can anyone confirm what shocks I can use on the front? Bay ones, king and link beetle ones etc or canyou use the rear ones?

Yes I was hoping to find an aftermarket one as a cheap temporary measure, hence not wanting to cut or bend the apron.

What you describe is the 6v and 12v stud spacing. Baring in mind how difficult it would be to modify it, I go with my first thoughts.
