Re: Repairing dual vacuum cans for distibutors..

883 is the right vacuum can, both for the AA (auto) and the T (manual) distributors, the difference between those two is the centrifugal advance (AA advances more at lower rpm) All my 883s are leaking on the retard side, so I'm running them with the retard side disconnected and set at 30 BTDC...

So, with car was running pulled plug cap off spark plug, no difference. But did notice that if I hold plug cap just above top of spark plug it is making perfect contact and runs as good as she did a week ago. So, if holding plug lead/cap above spark plug runs fine. If connected to spark plug, misfi...

Re: dipstick tube?

actually the way the oil cooler works in a VW engine, too thick of an oil will make it run hotter, as the system, which is calibrated for SAE 30 oil, can "think" that the oil is too cold since it relies on the higher oil pressure when cold to overcome the relief spring and then it skips the cooler, ...

as has been said, 1-4-3-2 clockwise looking at the engine from the rear bumper (as usual), the cylinders are as follows (they should be numbered in the cylinder tins anyway) 3=[- ]=1 4=[__]=2 when the mark in the pulley is aligned you are either in TDC of #1 or #3, if you take the valve covers off t...

I use the Motul Classic 20W50 oil as in the picture above, i've heard very good things about it from very reputable VW engine builders so it's all I use now, i do wish they made a lower viscosity version, though, I feel the 50 grade makes it too thick for the stock oil relief on a healthy engine

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic

different PDSIT iterations called for different float heights (mainly set by thickness of the washer behind the needle & seat valve), if you are mixing and matching carbs bodies and tops you might have to experiment to find something that a) doesn't overflow b) doesn't run overly rich c) doesn't run...

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic

Those compressions look pretty good! Things I would do now, even if they've been done recently you want to make sure everything is where it should be: 1) recheck valve gaps (0.15mm cold) 2) make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks, that's between intakes and head, carbs and intakes, and specially a...

Re: One or two nipples?

the calipers that came with the car had one nipple, the ones with two nipples are spare parts, that way you can use them on either side. make sure that they are the same though, karmann ghia calipers look the same but have smaller size cylinders! also, there's 72-73 calipers, which are bigger and do...

Re: Fuel pump

Thanks for your opinions chaps. All rather interesting and informative. As you say once the rebuild kit goes in, the pump will work accordingly. Fuel pressure in the VW7 pump is 2.8psi. The VW6 is 4.2psi. yes, I just found the info too, they're both supposed to deliver 400cc/minute, but anyway who ...

Re: Fuel pump

I think VW6 and VW7 seven have the same rating? I'll check later, but in any case once you put the same rebuild kit in both pumps they are pretty much identical, the different fuel pressure comes from different spring stiffness, so, once you put a new spring in there....

the type 3 and type 4 are 003s, the early automatic buses have a 003 too (similar gearbox side, different ring & pinion casing), but later buses have the 010, which was also used in lots of watercooled VWs.

oh and just for the record the 001 is the beetle semiautomatic gearbox :D

I suppose 64 could look a bit like 79 if you see it upside down. For 21 Marina blue, the 2 is nearer the dashboard and the 1 is nearer the front of the car. That's shown in the photo of the production plate at http://home.clara.net/hallvw/dating.htm . Reading the 9 as a 6, could the other digit act...
