Mine has a Mazda rx7 conversion too...very small alternator & looks a very tidy conversion.(not done by me).
I did it! was quite easy and cheap to do.. just need to adapt a strap and grind a bit of the case way for it to sit straight in.

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback

I found the best block was a piece of old still foam about an inch thick, same type of stuff like the floor mats you can get for the garage floor, 6x2" approx so it bends to the shape of panel. That ans plenty of washing up liquid and it sucks itself to the panel for a perfectly flat finish. Flating...

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback

Cellulose is not forgiving like 2pk, your prep has to be 100% spot on, 2pk is very high build and wont sink like cellulose. This is why I wouldn't use cellulose ever again (unless metallic basecoat and 2pk clear)

You've got a better eye than me! Would you say straight to 3000 or 2000 first?
2000 should be fine on celly

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback

some marks look a bit swirly, should be OK with that sponge, may be just a case of going over it again, 3000 grit shouldn't hurt the paint and would be easier to polish out..

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback

if it's celly it should be quite easy to buff out? I used to use 1200 on celly and simply buff out with compound, don't use wet and dry in a circular motion either, that will pronounce the flatting marks! if the swirls only came after machining then you're possibly using the wrong mop, I suggest a s...

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback

you need to go finer than 1500 really and get those swirls out, colour sanding is an art in itself, best done a day or 2 after painting before the paint sets like concrete! (2 pack anyway).

try doing black, that is a pain!!

Feel a bit stupid..they do work with the indicators!
Only had the car 3 years and just discovered this.
yes, they're indicators, changed colour to match front and rear indicators! they would look odd amber!

Re: how much drop is one rear spline?

this is 1 spline... if you want it somewhere in the middle you have to mess about with inner splines too and that's when it gets complicated! adjustable spring plates is probably a better choice to fine adjust. same suspension as Beetle 1302/3 IRS for reference... https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...

it simply in place when all 3 bolts are bolted to the flexi plate on the engine.

I've edited my 1st post as I meant to say leave it on box not flex plate! sorry for the confusion!

Re: Type 3 auto box

you leave the TQ on the box and support it with a small bracket as in the pic below, this prevents it falling out and damaging the pump drive etc..

Re: Antone got copy Gas Burners on their type 3?

the best fitment for the Type 3 is 914 alloys like I had on it, they fit perfectly and that's why they are so popular!

glad it still looks amazing! everyone I speak to always comments on how crazy I was to sell it! well there's nothing I can do about that now! by the way I still have the sub box I built for this in the loft, if ever you fell the need for a sub you can have it! (collection only though). here's a link...

Re: Windscreen washer on 68 fastback - how does it work.

when I had it it had an electric pump fitted and the original switch/plunger modified to activate a micro switch. if this is still fitted then check for power at the pump (in wheel well)

I don't know anything about the electronic ignition fitted so can't really comment! there's no magical secret to bypassing the switch, just chase the wiring back!

it would help if you had a multi meter handy..

Re: hard to start

have you tried to "hot wire" directly from the engine bay? that would by-pass the ignition switch.. when I had it it had traditional points but I always wanted to fit electronic ignition for piece of mind and also an electric fuel pump as it would suffer from vapour lock now and again when hot..

can't fault Harrington for service and quality, price really isn't that bad when compared to re-chroming! only niggle I have found is you can see polishing marks in certain light, no idea how to completely remove them!

car looking great by the way!
