Re: Timing marks
A flat spot off of idle is uaully the accelerator pump jet on the carb. Lack of advance on the distributor would affect performance past the idle stage and restrict revs.

Re: Dynamo Charging issues with T1 Dynamo
Type1 dynamo won't work on a type3 because the big hole in the bottom of the type3 dynamo is there to cool it, the type1 dynamo doesn't have this hole so it will overheat and stop working (it is cooled by the main cooling fan) Have you changed the brushes in the type3 dynamo, they cost penny's and a...

Re: all red rear lights and the MOT man
All red rear lenses are illegal so if fitted during an MOT then they are a definite fail. The only defence that an MOT test station would have to allow them is to denie that they were fitted when the car was at their test station but uasally if a driver gets stopped buy the police regarding the lens...

Re: Air filters/
If I had a stock engine then I would definitely go with the standard oil bath air filter arrangement as it makes the engine sound much quiter and smoother and it lubricates the top end of the engine due to the oil breather running into it and it also ducts in warm air for cold starts.

Re: Heat exchangers
As Marco said. Although another source could be the bellows between the body and engine is perished, missing or loose allowing the cooling fan to draw in the fumes from the exhaust.

Re: 914 calipers on a 73 fastback
Yes they are to replace your current front brake calipers and keep your front discs and rear drums. I had this set-up and they worked really well. Now have rear discs with calipers with 41mm pistons and vented front discs with calipers with twin 37mm pistons

Re: 914 calipers on a 73 fastback
There are a couple of options. With the standard type3 rear brakes then mk1 golf 1300/1500 (solid discs)are fine. They have 43mm pistons, you can use type3 discs but you have to clearance the caliper a bit and drill out the mounting bolt holes. The other option is mk1 or early mk2 golf gti. The same...

Re: 914 calipers on a 73 fastback
What distance apart are the caliper mounting bolts. If 76mm then I used mk1 golf calipers on mine, they are a floating caliper and work loads better than a type3 or 914 caliper.

Well at the moment I have been promised a rebuilt 1303s box which came with a split screen project that Jim at Wallhouse autos was dealing with that never went ahead so as yet I have not enquired about the rebuild costs. Have seen them advertised for around £800 exchange (manual)

Re: Has any one used Lucas transmission fix
Dont know if you have used your additive yet but i will tell you what happend when I used it. I bought a gearbox of Ebay to fit into my Square so I could get my box rebuilt. On driving the car it was evident that the Ebay gear box was worse than my original. I put in the addative (had already replac...

All the time our cars aren't so popular means that there will be less and less around making them even rarer and there for more of an attraction at shows etc. Then who's sitting pretty? Type3 kid!
