Re: Type 3 Auto Transmission Starter Motor

As far as I have read, you can use the automatic starter type 3 starter on the manual but not vice versa - an advantage is there is no bushing to worry about... they are normally more expensive to buy...

Good luck with the 1967 rebuild Tim.
Are you going to replace the thermostat mechanisms ? - presumably the previous owners took it out.

A few hot whiskeys might help you out, if that is your favorite tipple - you must be very near the Tullamore Dew Distillery ?!

Timing mark - I cleaned the original timing sticker and it confirmed 0 TDC as the second mark to the left, and that the pattern was 1 1 11 which corresponds to what I see in the inspection hole I havent got around to double checking it yet through no 1 after taking out the spark plug..... https://l...

Thanks Tim for replies- my pulley marks are as in the first post from the Samba 1 1 1 1 https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewt ... ?p=8947951 where the poster states that the second from left is 0 TDC - but as you say the best way to check this for sure is to get access to number one cylinder with ...

The book of the Volkswagen Type 3- (Simon Glen,2017)

Don't think this has been mentioned here? Although Simon Glen has been by the editor..obviously a very knowledgeable chap. Anyhow, a very good preview read on Amazon. He mentions that c 100 type 3's were assembled in Dublin... https://www.amazon.co.uk/book-Volkswagen-Type-3/dp/1845849523/ref=sr_1_cc...

Re: Engine Cooling Flaps / Linkage Seized ?

Like yourself and others, I had this problem too - connecting shaft was seized, but also some of the other flap mechanisms were broken/ seized, since the thermostat with rod was expanding! Luckily, the flaps were stuck open or half open, since overheating wasn't a problem- however it meant that the ...

Does any body know what material the lagging material over the flexible metal hot air ducts* is? It looks like cloth, but maybe it could be asbestos?! I got a replacement piece and I saw dust. Better safe than sorry. (* this is the c. 20 cm duct, 63mm diameter, connecting into the heat channels). Th...

Hello,
is the min-max engine oil difference value 1.25 litres (haynes manual) or 1 litre ? ( as seen in another publication on the 1500s- a German manual methinks) ... assuming this value is the same for all engine cases 1961-1973... regards.. PP

You can get a ATE rebuild kit either containing the piston retaining plate ( 13.0441-4209.2 with) or not - e.g. www.ATE.de website and online catolog; http://outcat-cs.tecdoc.net/ows/en/8F4219D4751E8700F9F05694BCB5BBF9.ows_cs5.srv?view=VIndexFramesetJsp or also appearing on ; http://seekpart24.com/v...

Re: Brake Calipers

The dust seals (and the piston seals for that matter) are the same for both early and late Type 3 calipers. The kit (e.g. FTE or ATE brand) is different for 'late' models i.e. > 7/71 in this case - kits should contain the piston retaining plate. Some kits, from certain webshops, also contain the ca...

Are my cooling flaps working- thermostat appears ok..

Hello, Reading about the importance of a working thermostat / cooling air control system, I examined my own. My thermostat bellows appears ok- about 28 mm cold and expands about 17 mm to 45 mm or so after a 20 mins journey. But a spot of paint on the horizontal 'flap' rod near the distributor didn’t...

Well, I have to admit I wasnt very experienced in the fitting of rubbers on studs... Anyhow, I got the knack- soften bump stop up a bit by boiling, lubricate and angle in with pushing and rotation from behind the stud, at a 45 angle. Heres to another 39 years.

The replacement does widen out from the 16 mm to maybe 22 mm. But that is after about 10 mm. In the meantime 16mm gap surrounded by hard rubber into 25mm metal stud is into superman territory, soap or no soap :!: Also as said before the original stops are visibly bigger and this isnt due to stretchi...
