Re: 2 issues spoiling my fun!!!

Hi chaps! Rite set the timing at 7.5 so now think the pinking is sorted! Have also fitted new leads and coil too, the new coil is a lot cooler now on a run!! But still have too keep pumping the pedal a lot on startup after a few days of it being left sat in the garage? Also been out for a spin this ...

Re: 2 issues spoiling my fun!!!

The advance weight springs may be weaker now than they were originally, which would produce more advance at the same rpm. Mike's advice sounds good to me, as always. You don't want it pinking. The original dissy on a 1500S has some advance even at normal idle. Did you try adjusting it as advised in...

Re: 2 issues spoiling my fun!!!

I don't recall what timing marks marks are on the 1500S, though the VW diagram shows them as the same as 1600 up to late '71 ('72 models). From memory there's maybe about 1cm, or perhaps a bit less, between the TDC and 7.5 BTDC. Give it a go, if that mark is less advance than you have been using up...

Re: 2 issues spoiling my fun!!!

Difficult starting after some days can be due to the float chamber contents evaporating, particularly if things got hot. The 1500S engine was timed differently. I'd aim for 7.5 BTDC (see http://home.clara.net/hallvw/type3ign.htm for the various diagrams) static, or with vacuum hose off (should be t...

Re: Setting timing 009

Yep, much better with the original vacuum dissy. The 009 flat spot is caused by a lack of advance during acceleration. It depends what pulley you have fitted. But usually the last mark is TDC. If you have two further marks clockwise from there. 7.5BTDC and 10BTDC. But it'll depend on your engine co...

Re: Setting timing 009

Cheers for that! It's suffering from lag on acceleration an the dreaded flat spot of the 009! My local garage fitted it as my original dizzy couldn't take electronic ignition!! Would i be better off re fitting my original vac dizzy? If so how do i re time it? I.e. Which marks do i line up with the s...

Setting timing 009

Hi, I've got a Bosch 009 with electronic ignition fitted to my 65 notchback, How do i go about setting the timing properly? Just got a new timing gun with the advance dial! Do i set that to 30 then rev it to 3500? Not sure which mark on the pulley to use? It's a rebuilt 1600 sp if that helps!! Any h...

Re: Wipers

Are the conversion devices you are using rated for higher loads like the wiper motor? Most I've seen are just designed for gauges and radios etc. Back in the old days, we used to wire a 6v bulb in series and hide it away somewhere. It might be worth doing that just to check everything else is worki...

Re: Blaupunkt radio testing?!!

No idea. Its untested so aim to get your money back. TBH, with it being a valve one its unlikely to work. Personally, I would avoid Frankfurt's as a rule. The auto select function often leads to cracks in the circuit board. Hang onto the faceplate though... 356's don't need them and Type 3 ones are...
