Re: Mystery knock solved

It’s automatic the original problem was the car would change into top(third) but not accelerate. Hence going to the first garage. Proper nightmare!

Re: Mystery knock solved

There is a chance I may, I still don’t know if the transmission is ok. Until the engines sorted it can’t be road tested.

Re: Mystery knock solved

Rebuild not yet finished, I’m hoping it will be finished by the end of June. When it’s sorted I will also have an engineers report so I will go back to the first garage with that and see what they have to say? They can’t deny their at fault but we will see . Will keep all posted.

Re: Going electric ??

Indeed, the evidence is undeniable it wasn't knocking when dropped off at the first garage.

Re: Mystery knock solved

I've received another email from Harry Harpics on my theory of a Jubilee clip, he thinks not more likely to be a tin wear 6mm washer.
I will be going to see the first garage owner when I receive the engineers report. I will be pushing for compensation but easier said than done.

Mystery knock solved

Well the 411 went off to Harry Harpics and the strip down began. I received an email with accompanying photos and a metallic object was sitting on top of the piston!!! On very close inspection of one photo it looks to me like a Jubilee clip, well the remains of one. The good news is there is little ...

Re: Mission Impossible? 2021..........

Best of luck with that Broady. If you don't reach the magic 60 I would be more than happy to make up the numbers in my type 4. Engine should be sorted by then!!! Fingers crossed.

Re: Going electric ??

Hi folks, I've been busy last week searching for a reliable engine builder. Good news found one!! He is 250 mile away but eh! Paul Miller of Harry Harpics, IRS fame. I am looking between 6/8 weeks. I've been let down by two engine builders over the last five months you know the scenario keep you on ...

Re: Ultrasonic fuel injector cleaning

Many thanks for the correction. David gave me a web address for Darwen Diesels who he thought maybe would clean and check function, I gave them a call however they don't do petrol but they gave me a phone number of a company in Warwick that do petrol Bob Beck Injectors £12 an injector, smashing fell...

Re: Ultrasonic fuel injector cleaning

Hello, I may be wrong but I think ultrasonic cleaning is done by sound waves and no other products are involved.

Re: Going electric ??

Having trouble with cutting and pasting, got my head round it now. The vids were done with the engine warm I did a vid from cold starting but it was to long and I was unable to upload, so had to do two shorter ones, hope this gives anyone listening a better idea.

Re: Going electric ??

Yes will do. I'm thinking because of my lack of knowledge I'm in no way going about this the correct way, I'm jumping from one conclusion to another and confusing everyone else. Not achieving anything and more than likely making things worse. Could we have an opinion on that?

Re: Going electric ??

Cheers for that ,all good information. When I sort out someone to clean the injectors a I will have them tested also, that will save me messing about. I wouldn't know what to look for anyway. Regarding the seals I know their nothing to do with the knocking but your introducing more on the jobs to do...

Re: Going electric ??

Thank you again for the useful addresses. Does the plug on the distributor have anything to do with the fueling? The oil capacity in the VW is not a lot, it won't take much to creep past the max line, you could then be in the realm of seal trouble I'm thinking?? Looking at the exploded diagram Hayne...

Re: Going electric ??

This is a bit worrying for me, how does petrol get into the engine oil? More importantly what's the cure? What sort of company would do ultrasonic cleaning?..... Also what's s/h ? There's lots of questions there sorry. In defence of not smelling petrol in the oil yesterday it was blowing a gale! I s...

Re: Going electric ??

Well that was a bit premature, I now know why the engine was racing!! Fuel injector sticking. I revisited the oil I dropped yesterday and there is a smell of petrol, how I missed that first time round I don't know. That changes a lot, could explain the clacking. Can you get injectors for these and i...

Re: Going electric ??

The oil was fine, good viscosity no unusual smell no shavings no sheen I would give it a clean bill of health, infact would say it was relatively fresh as was the filter....?????

Re: Going electric ??

Changed the oil and filter, 20/50 classic. It's not made any difference to the clacking!! Adjusted the throttle valve at the same time, idling speed is back where it should be. A bit more investigating will be done tomorrow ie check the tin ware and exhaust etc. Will keep you posted.

Re: Going electric ??

I know you did tell me early on to change the oil and filter. It's going to be done, thinking on I have no idea of the grade of oil in the motor at present or how long it's been in there. It should give me more information either way.
