Ouch! If the crankcase is showing signs of being worn you should get it line bored then install oversize bearings. Otherwise the new bearings will wear very quickly indeed.

Re: SBW360N is now in Lincolnshire!
After so many barren years, I have some progress to report. I am having my garage rebuilt and enlarged to give me more room to work on the car so should be able to make serious progress soon. The build is running late ... for various reasons ... but we are now into the final push and I expect the wo...

Re: Fuel Gauge Float
Hmm ... hadn't thought of that. I have dunked the float in boiling hot water and I have a steady stream of small bubbles from two bottom corners. You may indeed be right!

Re: Fuel Gauge Float
Reading Dave Hall's description of the sender was the first thing I did and I have eliminated the traditional problems. I removed the cylindrical cover (very carefully) and the float slides perfectly well up and down and my multimeter gives the expected resistance readings at top, middle and bottom....

Fuel Gauge Float
I problem I have come across in the last couple of years which is, I think, due to the dreaded biofuel we now have to endure. Several VW models have a tubular sender in the tank for the fuel gauge and the float seems to be permeable to biofuels. I first came across the problem before the first lockd...

Re: New E10 Petrol
Honestly I think its a bit over played. US has been E15 for a while and EU is mostly E10. Remember that cars intended for the US market will have been built for that market so they will be fine. Cars built for mainland Europe or the UK will not take kindly to being served with E10. Higher octane pe...

Re: New E10 Petrol
You're lucky if you can find E5 Super petrol within easy reach. My nearest Esso station is about 30 miles each way and I'm not sure if they sell E5 away. Additives to neutralise the ill effects are the way to go it seems.

Rescuing a Type 4 from advanced body rot means a lot of creative metalwork. Folk do still have parts like door and wings stashed away but you have to look hard.

Re: 411 petrol flap
The little box at the flap end contains the mechanism and it fills up with general road grime and gets stiffer and eventually stops moving. The side opposite the cable entry is a steel plate which can, with care, be prised out of the housing. You need to do this when it's not attached and is a lot e...

Re: 411 sedan handling?
The VW book says 18psi on the fronts and the understeer is heroic at that. I run mine at 24psi and it's transformed the handling. I would agree that 20 year old tyres would be the problem.

Quarter lights were an option for the 411/412.

Yes the brakes take a bit of getting used to. But, as David says, with a good clean through and fresh fluid properly bled, they will stop you when you need them to.

On my steering column the spigots are one above the other, with 'B' below 'D'.

Re: Windscreen Washer Connections
Thanks, David, 'Drück' is certainly a good start, to give me total confidence I'd like to know what the 'B' might be. I have the diagram but it doesn't give me any confidence about picking which spigot is which.

Windscreen Washer Connections
I am trying to reconnect the washer pipes to the column wash/wiper switch for my 412 and I cannot work out which pipe goes on which spigot. They are marked 'D' and 'B' and I was expecting a simple German equivalent of 'Bottle' and 'Screen' or 'Jets' but I'm stumped. Can anyone help, please?

That depends on how high you need to go. From the pictures I took at the time, it seems to blend into the upper scuttle, so you'll need to cut out the bad metal and put back what you need.

Re: Rain getting in!
The box doesn't need to be rusty to let the rain through. If the drain hole is blocked then rain water will accumulate and overflow through the fan. You need to take the fan off (a couple of screws once you've removed the air hoses) and poke the debris out of the drain hole.

Re: MOT Changes, May 2018
This is a potential minefield! On Sunday I retaxed my KG and, after the system couldn't find a current MoT, it said that since the car was more than 40 years old, it might be eligible for MoT Exemption. If I believed that it was substantially original then I just had to tick the box and - hey presto...
