Re: What distributor??

Pertronix do a nice ignitor that sits inside the stock dizzy - it is fit and forget - just take a spare rotor, points and condenser in the spares (just in case). 009s are so mis used sadly - the off idle stumble is no fun in traffic.

Re: Type 3 Auto Transmission Starter Motor

auto starters are longer - theyre output was higher - i think they were fitted to type 2 buses as well as T3s. Modern hi torque starters for beetles are probably as powerful as the auto starters were though.

Re: How can I improve my engine performance?

1955 is probably 76mm crank with 90.5 B&Ps. Should be a strong engine if tuned well. It may well have been built to provide torque and have modest compression and standard valve sizes - but equally it could be configured to provide more power at higher RPM - its really up to you how you want the mot...

Re: Auto gearbox refresh

I 'went through' my autobox and would strongly recommend leaving it alone unless it is faulty.
These 003 boxes are VERY strong. I would check the vacuum line for any damage to the pipe and change the fluids - maybe change the sump filter and gasket and see how you get on.

Re: HIP TO BE SQUARE

Awesome squareback Carl - you've found a goodun. I imported a 69 auto FI squareback about 10yrs ago into UK - it was the first late models with early bulkhead. The 912 looks really good - the best colour too - a great combo. Hope to see the square at some shows this year once were allowed out again ...

Re: 28 years later: Finding and buying back my old 72 Squareback

It looks great. I love early and late cars equally - late cars are probably rarer now which is ironic. I managed to find a late car with very low milage imported from US and added early front bullet lights but left the big bumpers and rear lights on it - one day I might do the same and go early - bu...

square is looking good - was probably considered a roomy car back in 70s :-)
I like the early bumpers and lights

The only other physical difference in the auto case is a cutout towards the back of the case to allow access to the flexplate bolts. Its probably the most universal case you can get :-)

Re: Twin Carbs.

sounds like a good plan - I would find another set of stock carbs - have them rebuilt and fit them when done - then either have the other set rebuilt or sell them on.
easier said than done though...

Re: Twin Carbs.

If the carbs are running well I wouldn't change them - other than maybe check jetting. Always tempting to replace with bigger but not always better. A friend had a 1776 bug and ran a pair of dellorto drla 36s with small venturies and jets and it ran really good but I think unless radical, the 1641 p...

you can buy the inner and outer window scrapers by the metre and the felt channel from places like https://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/ - that will allow you to get everything watertight for the UK climate. Nice purchase - hopefully coming from cali it will be solid underneath - time to protect it before...

Re: Type 3 Engine - Engine Stand

You can buy adapters specifically for air cooled motors that work with engine stands - they have a ring that connects with the bell-housing rather than relying on the 4 contact points. Not a requirement but they work really nicely and make the taking on and off really easy.

I was tempted when trying to setup the rear ride height after a rebuild.
But if you don't need to adjust regularly I would dial in ride height using inner and outer combinations.

If you ever wanted to repaint it would be straightforward but it wears its age very well - good luck but dont think you'll need it tbh

Re: Hello & Type 3 values?

welcome to the forum Carl. 17k for a sorted car sounds fair - its a big chunk of cash. I bought my square in 2010 for 2650 - a US 69 auto with 34k miles. But I have probably put 15 into it. I cannot see values going down any time soon - particularly for dry state cars that havent been pulled about t...

Re: Fasty too low

ideally buy a complete used type3 beam with trailing arms, tie rods - you can then replace BJs, seals and track rod ends. I have a type 1 beam going on my squareback - not due to the amount of lowering but the offset of the wheels. Have you tried raising the current beam? - if lowered too much the j...
