Welding front beam for MOT
Hello type 3 peeps. Long time no post. Been trying to sell the Fastback... Just had an MOT failure on rust on the front beam right by the ends, where the needle bearings are. Its rusted through, between the dust seals and the upright. Mr. MOT man was very doom & gloom about welding there. What's the...

Yes I was annoyed to miss it. First miss in 5 years (thats how long we've had our T3). Looked like a nice museum. I was going to have a good look at the Whittle centre. BTW the Bournemouth Air museum is about to close. Within the month. Never been there though. I reckon to start with the spark jumpe...

Wouldn't start -> bizarre ignition problem (but sorted no
Bit of a long story.... I had a wierd problem on our FI fastback. It ran fine for months and months, then recently when I decided to service it ready for a drive to the AGM, it absolutely wouldn't start. Of course, by this time I'd spent all my time, and daylight, doing the oil, valves, washing it e...

can anyone recommend a compression tester?
Hello, (very) long time no post.... Can anyone tell me what brand of compression tester they are using? I have a Motrax motorbike one with a bendy rubber hose that is impossible to screw into the spark plug holes, since they're deep and out of sight. I want to check compression, being 500 miles into...

Hello, Might be a bit late, but there are some photos with the mouning points labelled, on my website: http://vw1600e.org.uk/car/Rear/ I've fitted VW Heritage inertial reel belts in the back of our fasty, but the mounting bolts foul the seat base so its a right g*t to get back in place. Means the ki...

Here are photos of the various repairs on our fastback: http://vw1600e.org.uk/car/ Follow the links under "pictures". The rear work, which turned into a major restoration from the front arches back, was about 5K UKP. Eek. I've got over it now, and enjoy driving a solid, rust free car, which will las...

Yes I got a pile of big and small seals ("Big" are more correctly mounting bushes or something, as they certainly don't seal anything).
I put a message up about them on the forum so have a look.
If they failed, they only let more air into the inlet, so wouldn't account for petrol in the oil...

Got one from GSF had a T3 part number ending in 555. The outer sheath from the tunnel to the tinware was all split & cracked - sorted that out with loads of heatshrink. Now the weather will stay out, and the grease in. The engine end of the sheath seems to have something missing - it is just bare sp...

Accelerator cable Qs
The accelerator pedal was making a sort of grating noise as it was pressed, so I had a look yesterday. Cable was down to 1 strand. Oh dear. The club handbook says a beetle cable is equivalent. What about the sheath that runs past the gearbox? Does this come with the cable? I doubt it. The end has co...

Make it up.
I got some advice from a VW club person who happens to work for the DVLA. As long as the paperwork matches the stamp on the engine, they'll probably be happy. You can give it whatever number you like. Even no number is OK for an old car, as long as the V5 agrees. But he did suggest that if it ever g...

SAE90
SAE90. Thats what the later VW boxes take, and I can't think it'd be any different for earlier ones. Its a bit freaky, but just yesterday I changed mine (a 73 fasty). Its meant to take about 2.5 litres. Wear gloves - its very smelly oil, specially the old used oil. Lots of sulphur in it. You'll need...

I've ordered several sets of both the small ones, and the big clamp seals from http://www.aircooled.net/ $4 for 4 seals. Bargain. Thanks for the tip Dan. T3D suggested I try my local Bosch outlet. Fuel injector seals ?
Where can I get replacement injector seals? I saw a post on the VWType3.org list: http://listarchive.type3.org/archives/2003/february/msg00823.html which says they're the same as L-Jet. What car would have these? Any Bosch FI specialists that do mail order? Will my assortment box of round section O-...

Re: 72 heads
Matt, yours is a '73 isn't it? Yes, sorry everything I say is based on this - not much idea about the older ones! The universal replacement heads have a boss but you have to drill and tap M10 x 1.0 - bit unusual; I used a spare steering knuckle bolt and cut a groove to act as a tap. Ah, good, so a ...

Could I get an engine from a car with carbs (like the Remtec), put my injectors in the same heads and run it? I’m worried because there is a temperature sensor in one of the heads and I’m not sure whether this would fit into a carb cyl head?! Would I need to get my FI heads rebuilt separately? The ...

John Maher moved to the outer hebrides (no, seriously). http://www.johnmaherracing.co.uk/ and I've heard there's a very long waiting list (e.g. a year) for full engine rebuilds. Replacement engine number for Rebuild ?
I'm rebuilding my engine, on a new VW case. It has no engine number. I'm not going to transfer the old number, as the case is not scrap, and will probably be reborn in the years to come.

.... about 3000rpm at 60, about 3500 at 65 and about 72 at 4000k. Thanks. This fits with a comment by Dave Hall that its roughly 20 MPH/1000 RPM. Can't swear my tach is accurate though. I doubt many are. The funny thing is, this is for a dyno run to tell me HP. They quote it to 1 decimal place, and...
