Re: '73 Fastback Project
The heater cables are fairly self explanitory when you get into it. The two levers near the hand break. Both have twin cables, one goes through the tunel to the heat exchangers, the other pops out under the rear seat to control the flaps in the rear foot well. The front foot well flaps are controle...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
I'm trying to track down some new heater tubing. I read somewhere on here (can't find it now) that the heater tube is 50mm diameter 20 gauge (~1 mm). My local metal merchant is relocating just now and don't have anything, I'm struggling to find online supplier that will do 50mm tube that thin. Any r...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
I have used PO15 on leaking fuel tanks with some good results. Though after the minefield of googling paints and on the point of hitting order on POR15 I have actually gone for Corroless base and top coat. Bit cheaper than the POR15 stuff but seems fairly well recieved and comes from an offshore oil...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
Started welding in new metal this week. Thanks for the input on painting - I have a compressor but no airfed mask so I shy away from 2k paints so will go for option two. One problem I have is the flaps, controls, and wires for the heating air. I got the car as a bare shell with boxes of bits and wit...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
Thanks for those links. I have bitten the bullet and order some bits. Will take some time off later in the month when they arrive to weld it all up.
What is everyone's preference for painting? I would normally use a zinc primer and underseal but open to ideas.

Re: '73 Fastback Project
In your above post "Outer Rocker Panel" and "Sill Section" are the same panel. Just one is longer than the other. Rather than 1 being inner and 1 being outter. Have a look through here, i took hundreds of photos. http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3094&start=300#p62015 Star...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
Thanks guys. At the moment I am working out what repair panels to buy and what to make. The body is in decent shape, the previous owner had done some work. But they had only put on outer sills and had left the rotten inner sills and heater pipes. The floor pan is ok except for the edges. The front p...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
13 years ago I got this car, and 3 years since my last post... 2020 will be the year it gets back on the road! I have reread this old build thread, I have a terrible memory so thanks again to all those who have contributed over the years. I hope you're all well. This has always threatened, bu...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
Just a heads up for others: There arenarrowish channels and a venturi effect on the return pipe into the fuel tank designed to keep the inner 'cup' full even when the tank is nearly empty. Some of the tank sealers can clog that area, and produce symptoms of fuel starvation. While the usual de-rusti...

The cold start valve only operates when the starter is cranking, the thread below has some good information, and a useful link to a D-Jet manual http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=11125&p=59754&hilit=cold+start#p59754 Glad to hear the tank is in good condition  H...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
Hopefully the fuel pump not running on the ignition is a knocked wire, though maybe unlikely as I haven't doing anything at that end of the car. I will do some multimeter checks. The fuel pump works so it must be the regulator or ignition or a wire in between. I am pretty happy with the fuel tank. I...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
I fitted the working injectors back into the engine this afternoon and.... less success than I had hoped. The engine was just as reluctant to start and when it did it was still hesitant, easily stalls and cuts out when given gas. It is possible to pump the throttle and get the revs up, but simply pr...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
Hi thanks for the ideas. I have been doing some investigations... I pulled both pairs of injectors, with the fuel lines pressurised and the ignition on, pressing the throttle fires two injectors (one each side). You can here the injector click and spray. After some testing I discovered that the elec...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
To update myself... I remembered I had a spare coil which I just fitted and got similar results. Also the spark quality on all the leads is the same so don't see why the RHS should be consistently bad. I'm now wondering if fuel is being delivered to the RHS. My pressure sits around 25-26psi. Is ther...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
But in doing this I thought I would try and dig deeper in to the bad running. I recently tidied up the fuel system, serviced injectors, replaced pump, which as all helped. It's still reluctant to start and will die if given throttle, but can be made to rev by pumping the throttle. Thought I would ch...

I found this picture on the Samba. So today I drilled and mounted the regulator on the tin as shown. Certainly feels neater!

Re: '73 Fastback Project
I do have a question though. The car was project to me and the fuel lines weren't connected. I can't figure out where the Fuel pressure regulator should be mounted. Apparently on the tinware somewhere but I can't see where. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks! At the moment its just h...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
Gone but not forgotten. Nearly six years later! I have dusted off the old girl and made some progress. Engine fault diagnosed to combination of low fuel pressure and bad injectors. Had the injectors serviced to improve their spray pattern and replaced the fuel pump for a generic "kit car" type thing...

Re: Buying a Variant
I have been very slowly breathing life back into a project car I acquired years ago. Its injection and one thing I would add is to find a local specialist and get the injectors serviced. The guy I went to was really good, literally works out a garage but he could show me how my injectors leaked and ...

Re: Low Pressure Brake hose "Condensation"
Forgot to say, on my experiment of Fuel Hose in a jar of Brake Fluid not only did it dissolve the hose but it also turned the Brake Fluid black, so it obviously also changed the composition of the Brake Fluid. Definately not good. Well mines been sitting there since Sunday so we will see what happe...

Thanks for that guys. I think I will go for the Blue stuff and stick with what we know. Good to get it sorted before it becomes a real issue.

Re: Low Pressure Brake hose "Condensation"
For Brake Fluid it has to be EPDM Hose (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) inner tube with aramid reinforcement. Thanks for the suggestions. Think I will buy somemore stuff that claims to be EDPM. I'm not too bothered if it's black or blue so long as it holds the fluid! I got mine from ebay, can't r...

Low Pressure Brake hose "Condensation"
I had to buy some new low pressure brake hose from the reservoir. Now a lot of places seem to have black hose that is rated for brake fluid rather than the blue stuff. Fair enough I thought and bought some black hose and fitted it. However now it's been on for a while the hoses get what looks like c...

Re: Bleed Nipples size and pitch?
Hmm well I must have been having one of those moments when I was last looking at them. The spare nipples I have lying around that didn't fit in when I tried them last time fitted no problem this time. Oh well I think I must have had a rouge 6mm one that I thought was 7mm. They are 7mm, though I have...
