Re: Sole survivors: the very rarest cars on UK roads today

I suspect not. https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?q=VOLKSWAGEN+1500&commit=Search Approximately the same number of 1500s on the road for the last 15 years. Its hard to believe only 1 of them is a fastback. Howmanyleft's listing here will include 1500 Beetles. And all UK Type 3 Fastbacks were 1600s - I'...

Re: 412 Variant estate build.

That screen surround looks tricky. Blower box is neat but - maybe it's only that the camera angle doesn't show it - is there still a drain for the rainwater to get out (under the petrol tank)? (Mine was rusted in that area and we came very close to accidentally blocking it.)

Re: 412 Variant estate build.

as long as the splines in the bolt head are in good nick, re-use them! (its definitely worth cleaning them out thoroughly on the bench/in a coffee jar of thinnners) And before removing them, clean the splines with a small screwdriver and tap your splined bit in gently with a hammer. You don't want ...

Re: 412 Variant estate build.

The club parts guide https://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/partswap.php says nothing else fits, but this website https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/cv-boot-10174/vw/411-412/412-variant/1684-1-7?categories%5B0%5D=193 appears to have what you need. I've bought from them for my Mk2 Polo - delivery was sl...

Here is the one from the 412 that I'm (very gradually) restoring.

Re: 412 Variant estate build.

Great to see it starting, and amazing to see the cables are the same all those year ago, or years later. Depending on your perspective. The smart roadster I recently had used the same teleflex type cable for its sunroof. You mention a rotary wire brush, if im not too late. Use polly strip discs ins...

Re: 412 Variant estate build.

I do like the Type 4 but removing the tank is one of the jobs that would most make you wish it was a Type 3. I've got to take the tank out of my Mk2 Polo, and it'll be interesting to decide if it's worse than the Type 4. (Changing the spark plugs on your car will make you thankful it's not a Type 3,...

Re: 412 Variant estate build.

That's typical blower box rust. How is it around where the water drains out? That's an awkward bit to repair, and it's very near the petrol tank. I've been working on mine from inside the space where the tank goes - a job best suited to small people (which I'm not).
Floors look good though.

198 in the middle is a kit number - possibly a full set of bearings. 131-105-531 is the number of the single part.

For stripping paint and rust, I like these https://www.abrasivesworld.co.uk/stripp ... plain.html better than wire brushes.

Re: 412 Variant estate build.

Did the doors unbolt easily? I've had problems before undoing the big screws that hold them, although I haven't tried on my 412. Might be worth trying Jane and Bryan Terry for the window part. The blower box is a pain if it's rusty but with the dash out you'll see the state of it easily enough - or ...

Re: Anyone know the whereabouts of KPA 227K Variant?

I found the burnt-out one with a few other cars (including a Beetle that sat there for many years) on a bit of ground beside the A87 at Loch Duich. As well as being burnt it was peppered with bullet holes. The body looked reasonable from a distance but when I went beside the car I found that it had ...

Re: Part no for rear brake hoses

VW Heritage say 113 611 775E (250mm). So I checked an old URO catalogue I have, and it confirmed that number for double-jointed Beetles including 1302 and 1303, but shows a different number, 211 611 775C (280mm) for the left side on double jointed Type 3s (and both sides on Type 2s). No mention in t...

I've read on another thread here that Volvo 740 sills are similar to the Type 4 ones. I went to a Volvo dealer a couple of years ago but when I asked if 940 sills were the same as 740 they wanted the registration number! It also wasn't clear if they were still available from the main dealers, but th...

Yes, they should be the same as all disc-braked Beetles I think. VW Heritage certainly shows them as the same.
