Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback

It was a right fiddle but I managed to take the lever off the spindle move it around and get the nut back on with the dash still fully assembled. Whats annoying is I didn't move it far enough! Its much better and I now know how to do it. A just for a more leisurely time though. Ive cover 50 miles th...

I thought that, but he had no power at all when he drove it :?: :?: :?:
Lots of changes at once, id have that carb off, confirm is operation and then do a fundamental set up of the whole engine

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning

Thats the brake pipe nor the fuel. The fuel line run through the tunnel. I would ignore everything done by the previous owner. You have no idea what they really did, nor to what standard. It only waste your time trusting them. Always go from basics and assure your self that you have seen the thing d...

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning

Sounds like we are looking for a series of small faults then. Poor fueling and sporadic timing. Im just about to pop my carb off and see why is under fueling. But my engine was sounds very similar to yours in the video. But not as aggressive. but as soon as you applied some throttle it would "chug" ...

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning

What is the timing now set too? In my experience its better to time to the distributors map rather than the engine code. So if you've got a light, id go with hose off and pluged at 7.5BTDC dynamically, idle is 800-900rpm roughly. Then try reving the engine to 3000rpm with the hose on. You should get...

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning

Have you checked the exhaust at each head port. Ideal from cold start him up and then touch each branch, before they get too hot. Obviously be very careful. If one is cold/colder than the rest then it'll pin point the problem. But as David said, a carb off again won't hurt. I've just done a two year...

Daft question, got the HT leads the right way around on the left hand head? 1432 is the firing order 3 and 4 are the land hand head as you look at it from the back of the car. 4 being nearest too you.

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning

Okey doke, the engine code is on the top of the engine right next to the case join, near the throttle bell crank. I think we'll be ok with knowing its a T. T's were usually timed to 5 BTDC. But that distributor should be better suited to 7.5. Here you can see the various different pulley markings, w...

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning

Right lets see if I can unpick all of this. You didn't have the vacuum line from the left carb before this rebuild? Was the carb blanked off? If not then you had an air leak, and the fact the distributor wasn't plumbed up for advance means any old setting you had before you took it apart are now all...

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback

Reading practical classics, their workshop section had a piece about overhauling small motors, more specifically wiper motors. That was all the motivation i needed to do mine. https://ph7wja.am.files.1drv.com/y4majeyK0Iq-SrNQqSLuKzODAq6NSEXz_NLjpKcgGI6cXxaWLtKTpgC7U4GajaDQTVFqcmwHPt191eYA6s--nj0Ps6...
