Re: Going electric ??
Check around the air box just in case you knocked something lose like a hose or sensor - there's plenty of them. Anything that allows air to be drawn in directly will make the engine rev like mad. I once had the gasket fail on the cold start valve when driving home from work. Car was idling fine one...

Re: Going electric ??
I had a fan pulley with no markings too and it is more than a little annoying. I set my engine to TDC on no 1 cylinder and took the plug out of no 1 cylinder. With a little work and torchlight I was able to see the piston reach the top of it's stroke. I checked by seeing that both valves on no 1 cyl...

Re: Going electric ??
I've never found Haynes manuals to be particularly detailed in those areas where you really want a bit more info. I would recommend 'How to keep your Volkswagen alive' by John Muir. It was written back in the day when you could still by a new type 4 and has a wonderful section on tune-up for your ai...

Re: Going electric ??
Apologies for asking and it might seem obvious but have you checked the points? If the dizzy has been worked on then the points will almost certainly have been disturbed to get access to change the vacuum unit. Damaged or incorrectly gapped points will make the engine run like an absolute dog. I'd c...

Sorry 937carrera I never saw your post until tonight. That is indeed the car - the sort of Texas Yellow one - and a very big project for sure. I've definitely got my work cut out on this one although by the time I finish cutting out the rot there might not be anything left! I will keep everyone post...

Re: ultrasonic cleaners
I've used them to clean all sorts of little parts. I've cleaned greasy rubbers in soap, wax-oiled metal parts in solvent and dissolved rust away from small metal parts in dilute acid (followed by a wash in water and heat drying). I find them pretty useful for those fiddly little parts with areas bru...

Just to say, the door card grommets are indeed bigger. The clips are bigger too. Sadly they're not terribly easy to get hold of but you can usually find some still attached to knackered old door cards!

Re: Fuel injection or carbs
Auxiliary air regulator can be a problem too. Mine was stuck giving poor idle and rough running on warm up. If you think air supply may be a problem you could check this part. If you hold it lightly and flick the body you should hear a nice ringing 'ting' sort of sound. If it is stuck it'll be a dul...

Re: Fuel injection or carbs
I had numerous problems with my 412 LE when I first got it back on the road what with rough running and poor idle, blowing smoke and running rich. It took considerable time and patience with a methodical approach, not to mention a good deal of help and advice from members of this forum, to iron out ...

Afraid I can't get down this coming weekend but I could really do with the volvo sill, just in case I can ever get enough repair panels together to rescue NHS70L! Peter, how much would the sill be? broady_6 would you be prepared to collect and store for me? Thanks to you both.

Do you know if there are any type 4 body panels or cuts? I need rather a lot for my extremely rotten and long term project. I need all sorts to be fair! Could I have the address please? Thank you.

Re: steel wheels
Yes, I'll repair if possible but the one I did get the tyre off was in a really terrible state; the inner rim (to stop the tyre moving inwards) was just flaking rust and the valve hole a rather uneven, large egg shape. The tyre was shredded and the car has been sat outside for 25 years so perhaps no...

My long-term (read severely corroded, probably a scrapper) 412 project has badly dented and corroded wheels so I need five replacements. They are the 4.5Jx15 type with 46mm offset. I found some wheels on vwheritage that are 4.5Jx15 with 45mm offset and 4.5 inch backspace. Measuring my old wheel show...

type 4 tinware
Daft question perhaps but how much (or how little) engine tinware is interchangeable between a 412 and the type 4 engine fitted to type 2's? I ask because I've got an engineless 412 so I'm going to need to do some parts collecting and I can see tinware being a worry.
Thanks for all and any info.

Re: Type 4 411le rear wheel bearings?
Jon, Thanks for the lead on the bearings. I will be getting some ordered up very soon along with some seals. In the meantime I'll see if repacking and tightening up will quiet the bearing down a little. Sorry to hear your car is playing up. They do tend to do that, don't they. I always seem to get o...

Re: Type 4 411le rear wheel bearings?
Jon,
I'd be interested to know where you got your bearings from as my 412 needs the rear bearings doing - the drone is getting quite loud these days!
You got a type 4 over in Walsall? I'm just the other side if the M6.
Cheers

Re: How to measure rpm with multimeter
Having read around a bit more I think measuring with the engine running from cold was not a good idea as it would be running a faster idle. I'll measure it again when it's properly warm. 3360 rpm is not right but it does seem fast, for example, when driving from cold and I depress the clutch I can h...

How to measure rpm with multimeter
Hello all. On Friday I set the valve gaps, points gap and the ignition timing on my 412 LE and wanted to measure the idle as I think the engine sounds a little fast. Even but a little fast. I put my meter onto rpm(x10) for 4 cylinders and at idle it read 336, fluctuating +/- 5 but the engine is cert...

Re: Coil resistances?
Update to the long running hunting issue. I changed the points today and set the correct gap and the car instantly sounded different with no rise and fall of idle rpm. Went out for a drive and it's a totally different car. It picks up revs quick and gets down the road no problem. There's no stutteri...

Re: Coil resistances?
Apologies if I sound a bit thick but where do I check the voltage, at the battery? I have installed a new alternator (nut fell off shortly after I got the car back on the road and it destroyed the thread on the old and tired one) and I tried a new voltage regulator some time ago on one of my many ef...

Re: Coil resistances?
Thanks for the advice. My ECU does have an adjusting knob on it and it is currently turned all the way down as it used to run really rough. I will revisit it though as there have been changes since. My car is pretty thirsty though, doing all of 16-17 mpg on average over the last six months. I wonder...
