Re: Coil resistances?
I suspected an air leak too so I changed all the vac hoses, which did help but didn't fully resolve the issue. I've fitted a different auxiliary air valve without any change and neither of which showed a problem according to the test in Clymer. Changed the MPS too for a spare, again no change. Only ...

Re: Coil resistances?
I got the Bosch one ending 220 after lots of cross referencing. The old one doesn't look terribly old given the appearance of the green wiring. I'll hang onto it. Car running okay now with the cleaned up cap, rotor and a blob of grease on a small bit of exposed wire on the condenser, although it's s...

Re: Coil resistances?
New points, rotor arm and cap were already ordered. I've ordered a condenser now too after finding some info on the old timer website. Soon as they get here I'll fit it all and see how it runs. It's in for MOT next week so I'll get them to do the valve gaps and timing while it's there. Thanks for al...

Re: Coil resistances?
Well, I found various condensers of which none have the same part number as the one currently fitted. I always thought they were much of a muchness but apparently not. One wont fit, a square and circle thing, and the other two have different part numbers. All start 1 237 330 but the last three digit...

Re: Coil resistances?
Thanks for the suggestions. The car is garaged at night and the worse times have been after the car has been sat out all day in the wet and damp at work. It tends to run okay in the morning, if it's dry. I've got a condenser around the place somewhere so I'll replace the existing one and see how we ...

Coil resistances?
Hello all, I'm wondering if anyone might know about coil resistances. My FI 412 has been running rough on and off lately and I noticed it was accentuated in wet/damp conditions leading me to think ignition. The distributor cap had deposits on all four contact points and there is erosion of the leadi...

Re: 412 diagnostic
Hi, Can't say the exact thing you describe has happened to me but it sounds like an electrical fault to me. Some time ago I had the experience of my beetle cutting out seemingly at random. Turned out to be a bad earth in the engine bay, the wires were connected but there was some corrosion at the co...

Re: Cold start FI problem
So I removed the cold start injector but no change. I changed the carbonized plugs but no change. I twiddled the knob on the control box and ... it's like a completely different car. After adjusting all the way clockwise and letting the engine cough itself clear of all the excess fuel in clouds of s...

which spark plugs
What is the correct spark plug for my W code type 4 FI 1700 engine? My plugs are in the car and I want to order some more. vw heritage do WR8CC (long reach) and W8CC for type 4 1700-2000. Anyone got a recommendation or anywhere else they get their spark plugs from. Thanks.

Re: Cold start FI problem
Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I disconnected the wiring to the cold start injector with the engine idling while cold and it made not a jot of difference. I haven't yet pulled the injector to see if it injects due leakage. I'll take it out, tape up the hole and see if it does leak. I swapp...

Re: Cold start FI problem
I changed the thermo switch but no joy. Found the cylinder head temp sensor cable was loose so fitted it properly and the engine runs worse. Its back-firing now. If I allow more air into the air distributor box by partially disconnecting the hose from the case breather the engine picks up and the sm...

Re: Cold start FI problem
Sorry to revive an old thread but did changing the thermo switch solve the problem? My 412 LE is doing pretty much exactly what was initially described in this thread. It starts, runs fine for 30 secs then the revs fall and it runs like a dog before cutting out. There’s white smoke with a petrol odo...

Re: alternator trouble
Thanks for the advice. I suppose the stripped thread could be from the pulley spinning, unattached, on the alternator spindle. The woodruff key has disappeared and I suspected it has passed through into the fan housing and/or heat exchanger. I thought to get a 55A but it's good to have some further ...

alternator trouble
Hi. Looking for a little help regarding the alternator on my 412LE please. Driving home the other night I heard a sudden noise which was shortly followed by a dry scoring noise, rather loud. I had all gears and the engine got me the quarter mile home. On inspection in the engine bay I found a loose ...

another one hits the road!
The day has finally arrived! After rebuilding the engine and having it installed together with other re-commissioning work, I finally went to pick up my 412LE with nice new MOT. I can honestly say it's an absolute joy! A couple of little niggles like speedo and fuel gauge not working but drives a tr...

Shortly after my getting plate relined I found a NOS one on ebay, the vendor had three of them! I think Volksfarmers had the last one a week or so ago.

Re: 412 clutch
I had the same trouble. Seems clutch plates, especially 210mm, are near impossible to find. I opted for relining at a local company. They did a cracking job at a very reasonable forty quid.

Re: engine
Hi, interesting thread this. I need to fit a new clutch to my '72 1700 412 engine and I'm struggling to work out which size I need. The clutch plate I removed is 215 mm. The Haynes manual (for what its worth) states 215 mm after August '69 (although it makes no mention of any later changes) but the ...

Re: flywheel end play
Thanks for the advice, makes much more sense than the manual and in a lot fewer words too! I'll install the two shims, invest in a dial gauge and determine what shim I need. The shims are the ones which came out of the engine but the block was rebuilt with new internals. Thanks again.

flywheel end play
Hello all. I've been trial fitting the flywheel on my type 4 tonight. I fitted the three shims then the flywheel and torqued it up so I could check the end play. I don't have a gauge so I rigged up a flat piece of metal on a stud fixed to the case. I tried moving the flywheel but could not detect an...
