PHOTO CALL FOR NEW CLASSIC CAR TV SHOW

Post by Editor » 05 Nov 2018 01:08 am Hi All, There's a new Classic Car TV programme being made featuring a Type 3 Fastback which has been worked over and mildly customised. If you can help with a venue or tidy Type 3 to help with the reveal, that would be great. This is what Will says:- " I work fo...

Re: Case de Fye's autos...

Well, Brian Fye is very USA, up in Oregon, so I wouldn't expect it to be Gaelic. Probably Casa rather than case, though Brian may agree he has a 'case ' of VW-itis. Great guy, lovely family, and was instrumental in setting up the biennial VW Type 3 Invasions in the USA back in 2002.

Re: Which threads?

There's also the complication of needing an angled one for the short rod on the inner end, which are LH thread, and hard to find. The straight LH thread ones are common.

Re: Fuel injection or carbs

From my experiences with both, the carbs (twin 32PDSIT-2 and -3) work well at higher RPM, while the FI gives better low down performance. Once running well, FI will stay working well for longer, but as you say, there is a dearth of expertise for the FI. It's a simple system to get your head round, b...

Re: Type 3 original decals

On later cars the tyre pressures sticker is on the underside of the glovebox lid.
Screenwasher pressure is 56psi with a red cap for a Squareback. What is it for the Notch and Fastback? 45psi sounds about right with black cap?

I've only heard of them through USA sources - they may have been something VWoA produced.

Nothing on the past members lists anyway and the only thing on the web I can see is your request on vzi. Danny may have a photo somewhere but I don't think his thousands of photos are indexed.

I thought Notch doors are always 3-hole, but later Variants from '67 and all Fastbacks have 2 holes.

Paint code label on rh side of spare wheel well, sometimes partly stuck over an inspection label (prufer); BS Seat belt sticker on bonnet catch panel; Tyre pressure table on inside of glove box lid; Valve clearances on fanbelt access lid; 12Volt / 6Volt coil label; 12Volt red flash rh door pillar of...

Re: 411 1972 Wiper motor

I think you need a live feed to park the wipers after you switch off the wiper switch.

Do watch out if you play with wipers without disconnecting the battery - you can cut a finger off, such is the power in the motor.

If you're carrying any significant load, I'd put the rack further forward. The rear already has 60% of the weight on it.

Re: Hard start relay

Look at http://home.clara.net/hallvw/starter.htm before doing expensive things like replacing the starter motor. It's a common problem, may be helped by cleaning out and light lubrication on the starter shaft. I finally fitted a relay in the red cable from the front. There's a useful connector under...

Get the proper Type 4 tin from Jane and Bryan, the UK Type 4 experts. They won't rip you off! Phone 0130380374 for their workshop. If you're down in Kent any time, they'll welcome you with open arms. They might even have an engine; certainly free advice too.

Re: Front end judder

If you grab the top of each front wheel and pull and push out and in, is there any slack? If so that can be taken up in the upper bar. There's an M8 bolt and lock plate on the the end, and the slack is caused by wear on the plastic wear plates.

Re: Fuel cap help

The screw petrol cap was fitted to '73, and late '72 Type 3s. I can't say whether the Beetle cap is the same as the Type 3, though I know the filler pipes have the same internal diameter, so I suspect they are the same. While it's possible the fuel was lost by evaporation over a substantial time, it...

Re: Front inner wing

I suspect the holes were for ventilation to help dry out what are more or less salt boxes once winter weather plays its tricks. Type 3s from 1972 got these. Maybe the same for Type 4s. Probably the previous owner decided to cover them before they allowed salt water to get in.

Re: Ignition/starting issue

It's a pre-engage starter, which means that the motor turns slowly and winds the starter gear on a spiral thread until the gear engages with the flywheel ring gear, at which point contacts inside the solenoid engage to put the full starting current through the motor. It may be the motor shaft needs ...

They reckon older ones are unlikely to have a problem due to the lead impregnated on the seats over many years. They run hotter than water-cooled heads anyway, so use hardened inserts.
