Lots of lovely detail on that report. Thanks broady.

What was the sound-proofing stuff you lined the engine compartment with? It looks like the original!

Re: Casa de Fye's autos...

Yes, Broady, Facebook. I guess you have to be a friend to see it. Lots of noise, revs rising out of control and the air cleaner flapping around like mad! Re: Type 3 fuse board relays

Flasher relay, X-relay, intermittent wiper relay (My '73 that never made it to the road again had one). Mostly empty; maybe some obscure devices (not HRW or FI main relay (both under rear seat) or FI fuel pump relay (under dash on inner wing - driver's side).

Re: What's going on after spark plug change?

You probably interfered with the warm air inlet to the air cleaner. Those flaps automatically allow an amount of warm air into the air intake and carbs. The notch can be set to stop the heated air in if the engine is running in a warm/hot country.

Re: Silly question of the day.

The reason that light should come on when ignition is turned on is that it is then connected to 12Volts. When the generator system gets up to 12Volts, that is in the opposite sense, and the net volts across the bulb is zero. I suspect the conversion has not taken this into account, and/or the bulb i...

The distributor drive fits differently from the Beetle. Was care taken to position it correctly for a Type 3 when rebuilding?

Re: Engine stalling/cutting out

FI Filter is clipped to the fuel pump, which is mounted to the front axle; it's a square plastic box. Item 4 in diagram at http://www.hallvw.clara.net/type3/T3pbo/T3pb1-70.htm . The normal inline round plastic filters are not suitable. I have a very few of the NOS ones. You could separate the hose f...

Re: 71 squareback air box leak?

It's certainly possible that water is leaking in past the screen rubber. It can build up quite a pressure with 18" head of water. The tray below the bulge can corrode, and also rust can get between the bulge and the front of the tray - spot welds pull when the seam rusts, and you get dimples in the ...

The Fuel sender overhaul is dealt with at http://home.clara.net/hallvw/fuelsend.htm . Another member had the same problem and fixed id somewhat similarly.

Re: PHOTO CALL FOR NEW CLASSIC CAR TV SHOW

The one they had wasn't perfect, and they felt the car looked better for having a shallower bumper. I don't think it was worthwhile in cost, but why else do some owners replace with the early bumpers, if it's not for looks. At least we didn't get the ugly aluminium bumpers of the 1974 412 models (US...

Re: IRS gearbox tool

I think crunching when changing down is most likely due to worn synchromesh cones. It can help to 'double de-clutch' with a bit of throttle while the pedal is up and the gear is in neutral. It can also be beneficial when synchro is worn to do the same when changing up, but without the throttle blip....

M8 x 22 is what's in the Type 3 Parts Book. I guess with an 8mm flange on the MC plus a B-form lock washer between that and the bulkhead threads, 22 would be correct.

Re: Diagnostic Plug

I took my old Beetle into the dealership for a diagnosis around the time they had the diagnosis system. Obviously they couldn't do the whole job, and reported faults that weren't there (like front toe-in being zero, which was correct for radials). Sadly they did not report the rear linings being dow...

You can find paint codes at http://home.clara.net/hallvw/vwpaint.htm along with reasonable representation of the colours. Peru green is a likely one; deep sea green is much less common.

Re: Timing issues?

Check the distributor cam is not scored; use some grease or Vaseline on the cam (or better still, the special cam grease that was often supplied with Bosch points). If the points have a white plastic heel, look for some with a brown or black heel material. If the screw is not tightening, you may nee...
