Re: After 15 year wait.... my fasty will be tax free 1st Apr
Only if the Chancellor announces the change in bands and rates for VED, AND writes to inform the DVLA that he's done so. I'm assuming its UK Registered in 1973, in which case, all you do is apply for change of taxation class to Historic Vehicle, although some people have indicated the process is aut...

Re: STOLEN!
That is a crying shame, but definitely pikeys I'd have thought, I had one pikey empty the skip on my drive of anything remotely made of metal, every time I came to put more stuff in their seemed more space than I remembered. A neighbour told me that a van kept stopping while I was away, and a chap k...

Re: Not car related but worth an ask...mobile phone insuranc
I've never had mobile phone insurance, I just buy them outright, and rely on the 12 months Warranty and the fact that I'm careful what I do with the phone, so far, fingers crossed, I've only lost one phone when it was nearly three years old and worth about £15 to replace off eBay.

Re: dipstick tube?
Yes, I'm using the single grade SAE 30 recommended at the time of manufacture, but then I never take the T3 over 55mph (Speedo indicated so probably less than that). However, having read more into this, I think what broody_6 says is right, since VW changed the oil specification in the mid to late se...

Re: dipstick tube?
Does one of these fit a 411/412 dipstick? I realise the oil is separate to the dipstick on the 411/412, just wondered at the fittings as I want one for the dipstick on my 412.

Too early in the year for me, the 412 is currently SORN, won't be on the road until April, when it has free Road Tax, and its by no means a show vehicle, ha

I'd most likely buy a pair.
If you're making them, I think offering red and amber options would be a good idea too, indeed, why not the rear clusters as well, since no-one else is re-manufacturing them at the moment.
I think keeping or obtaining spares is always going to be an issue with the Type 4.

Re: Letter from Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen not Genuine?
Well, I got a response, apparently as this measure isn't going to be subject to legislation, as the Chancellor has announced he will make a decision each year rather than introduce a rolling exemption, which would require legislation, it will just be announced/confirmed at the next Budget, before Ap...

Ignition Plug Leads
The ones on the car are at least 10 years old, probably older, they still work, but probably need replacing. Already tried GSF, they sold me a set that was about a foot short on one of the runs, and then after some time looking at their computer admitted they don't make a set, but advised how to mak...

Re: Letter from Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen not Genuine?
Somewhat concerned myself, I've decided to write to the All Party Parliamentary Historic Vehicles Group http://www.historicvehicles.org.uk/hvg3.php 'Dear Sir/Madam, Although everyone is heartened at the news within the 2013 Budget, that Historic Vehicles Exemption to VED will be extended by 12 month...

Re: Letter from Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen not Genuine?
Ok, rang DVLA today, to speak to the Case Officer. Seems they had contact with Volkswagen UK, who confirmed the car was made in 1973, so a brand new V5 stating that the 412LS was built in 1973 is winging its way here. Took a long time, maybe the clue that the Museum that wrote the letter is based in...

Re: T3 Generator Light stays on
Took out three shims today, got the standard 1/2 inch of play, so sorted, just need to buy another spare belt, as you do. To be honest, even though I know the belt isn't over tightened, I have a whistling sound from the brushes end of the dynamo, definitely the brushes end, this is probably quite no...

Re: T3 Generator Light stays on
Fan belt seems bedded in now, and slips on start up, so I'l have to remove a couple of shims in the next few days.
Here's a link to my video of the Commutator Inspection, seemed ok to me after a wipe with kitchen roll.

At the moment it's running with all the shims fitted, as the fan belt was a lot wider than the one that came off, I intend to give it a few weeks before I think about it again, cheers.

Re: Struggling to get seats out
Yeah, don't forget the safety stop, you need to remove it before sliding the seat off the back of the runners, it's a single screw in front of the seat, in the middle, it holds the safety stop in place to stop the seat falling off the runners while you're sat in it adjusting it front to back.

Yes, a magnetic pen and copious rags would have made a lot of sense, thanks for the tip, but still a ball ache. Yes, its fixed her, here's the old fan belt, would have broken in one of two places by the looks of it, although as you know its not as disastrous on the suitcase engine if the fan belt do...

Re: T3 Generator Light stays on
Job done today, 15 minutes if you have all the tools in the same place (I didn't), was simple, but what a bleeding nightmare trying to get the new fan belt on, the belt was one of those packaged double folded which I urge people not to entertain, as it took at least 30 minutes just to get the new be...

I don't think it can be expanded, as a web image it was only 96dpi to begin with, you can generally get away with web images of about 150dpi.

It would be nice to have some action shots too, I don't suppose there's anyone rallying in a Type 3 or Type 4 these days, ha.

Yeah, a picture on the index page would be a good idea, but really you'd want a group picture of every model.
It doesn't happen all that often though.
