MAINTENANCE THINGS you never think about....

Here are some timely things to check to keep your Type 3 and Type 4s working well, from our very knowledgeable Forum member from across the pond, Jim Adney. Just some thoughts about parts of our cars that get ignored: Plastic sheeting inside the door panels I've had body shop people tell me that th...

Re: 68 RHD Squareback

How did you know PRH are my brother's initial, Peter?

I'm in the process of selling my Fastback RDH 96K, which I bought in Summer 1990, largely as it has my middle son's initials! Downsizing my fleet! I've just been looking through lots of photos of restoration, etc.... very nostalgic.

Re: Generator rebuild

How did the commutator surface look? Did you use some fine sandpaper to clean it up? When turning did there seem to be excessive sparking? I've a feeling I've seen some warnings with replacement generators that suggest the guarantee is not valid unless the regulator is also changed. I've no idea of ...

No, definitely not self-inflicted. It would be nice to think there was a Type 3 & 4 Community in Ukraine to make use of what they've viewed, but more likely they are using details discovered for less polite purposes.

Re: ACCESS MAY BE DENIED AT ANY TIME! URGENT!!

We've had our bandwidth allocation increased temporarily, thanks to clook.net . I'll have to keep an eye more often to see we're not getting a repeat of the problem. Ruskies last time, Ukraine this. Connection? The alternative is a big increase of the hosting charge from £60 to £96 pa.

Re: And were back!

I should thank Clook.net for moving us to the larger bandwidth package until the end of the month. After that I'll have to watch the bandwidth frequently to try to catch the situation before it becomes critical. There are still a few 'bots' that are greedy and don't benefit us, but this time they se...

ACCESS MAY BE DENIED AT ANY TIME! URGENT!!

We have had a site from the UKRAINE looking through the site gobbling up our bandwidth. I've done what I can to block the ISPs but I suspect it's not been entirely successful. We have used over 90% of our month's bandwidth allocation with 10 days still to go to 31st Jan. Please use the site sparing...

It was bugging me that I used to know how, so it made more sense than staying awake trying to get to sleep! Also, I tend to have a mid-evening snooze while Anne watches historical programmes, so staying up isn't hard!

Re: Type 3 door hinges.

I put a mirror hinge pin in my Dad's 1959 Beetle, but it was probably when it was only about 7 years old, and I was about 20 and happy to hit the old one out with a large lump hammer. Ah, the confidence of youth!
I think I would be more circumspect these days.

I'd better have a slot, though i'm afraid it will probably be the Golf Variant again, but I'll bring the stand and a gazebo as usual. Might even sort some parts out!

Re: Members only room

I've just tried, and I can't find the list of members - there are 61 on there, but in the past I've been able to work out how to see the list, but I can't find it at the moment! Maybe I need to go to bed and try again in the sanity of daytime.

Re: Inner wing panel

I think it was to beef up the front to reduce the problems of deformation of the cabin in a 10mph frontal impact. The USA brought in several requirements in the late 60s. I saw at least one short-nose Type 3 with those panels. The spring mount is quite a bit further forward I think. I tend to salvag...

Re: Gearbox mounting

I've probably got a decent one here, and I might even be able to locate it.
The problem is folk unbolt the engine from the cross arm towards the back without supporting the gearbox, and let it hang, which splits away the rubber bonding.

It must make the sill assembly that bit stronger to have the web there. The eater pipe doesn't add much as it's only held by a few spot welds at the ends (AFAIR).

Rear mounting? Do you mean front, (towards the front of the car) or is it a swing-axle?
The front mountings are different for auto and manual. The auto ones are hen's teeth items!

Re: Coil resistances?

With a Type 4 it's not as easy to get access to the battery, being under the front seat ISTR. The regulator output would be an easier point to try. Essentially as you speed up the engine you should see a decent voltage rise. A fully charged battery has a voltage of around 13.2V or so when not being ...

Re: Coil resistances?

Check the charging voltage at mid-range rpm. It's a common problem on the FI that gives poor mpg when the regulator is not giving the right sort of output. Somewhere in the region of 14 Volts is OK. I'm not sure what your Type 4 alternator has by way of a regulator. With low supply voltage, the FI a...

Re: Coil resistances?

Some of the Type 4 ECUs have a rich/lean knob on the top edge to adjust the fuel mixture. Hunting can be the sign of a weak mixture. If yours has one, the knob clicks as it's turned, so you could see if that makes any difference, but note where you started so it can be put back in the same place. Hu...

Re: Wheels.

I've used Hammerite smooth silver, which gives a similar result to the way VW painted the later wheels. It lasts well, and is easily sprayed over again if rust spots do come through in time. Rub down any surface rust first, and use coats of Hammerite primer if the surface isn't smooth. Make sure you...
