Re: 1972 Squareback Door Hinge Pins
I have a few NOS outer parts (the inners are part of the door) somewhere, but I need to find them - not sure when I'll get chance. Check there is room for the pins to come out top down / bottom up as that would be easier if you plan to punch them out. If you do, make sure the door is well supported,...

Re: Door hinge welded bracket bent
Like Dave said, They were pretty brutal putting them together. If its not much then you may even be better leaving the door attached. It sounds like it may have been caused dropping it off the jack with the door open and it catching something. The easiest fix would be to apply the opposite force to ...

Re: Door hinge welded bracket bent
If its just the bracket then it should bend back as long as there is not too much damage to the base of the A post. The 2 brackets should be parallel, so quite easy to determine where it should be. The adjustment on the nut plate should help align the door if you are left with any lateral error afte...

Re: Noise From Engine Bay
Block the tail pipe with the palm of your hand to listen for Exhaust leaks. They sometimes leak from the rear heat exchanger to exhaust box joint which may not be obvious. The hole in your bellows should not be ignored as it will suck hot air into the cooling system off the exhaust - it certainly ha...

I'm not sure if you see anything on these.
Bughaus restorations in Nottingham (01159589265) did the work. It was 7 years ago though.

Re: floorpan replacement help
Yes, the make up of the floor pan is different to type 1 as originally it was a single pressing. Presuming you have Klassic Fabs pans, its usual to do as you've done and either but weld to the lip or over lap one way, depending on what you want to see from below. I didn't fit mine, but I think the p...

Re: Parts Manual
I think you're ok with the splines, the only problem I know of is fitting a 2 spoke steering wheel to a later car with column mounted wiper switch as they clash.
I vaguely remember having to make a spacer to fit a 4 spoke to an earlier car (I was young... ).

Re: twin rear spring plates to single
The standard late Type 3 spring plate is a 113 number so I would imagine so.
To change to swing axle would require the whole assembly - gearbox, rear subframe, cables etc

Err Wow!
Its obviously well beyond any sort of economic restoration, but there maybe a few parts worth saving.
If you can get it out...

Re: A few Questions Engine and interior
Its difficult to say, but owning a few older British motorcycles I take the view that at least it proves there's oil in there and when it stops leaking you worry! It would be better to quantify the leak (i.e. miles / litre, hopefully not the other way round!) and carry enough to top up during your t...

Re: Throttle not returning to idle?
I had something very similar on the way back from Ninove. It turned out to be the carb linkage rod locking nuts weren't tight and while one of the rods got longer it held the other carbs throttle off the stop.
Worth checking anyway...

Re: Floor pan seal foam or rubber??
I had a 74 beetle that had the mastic / foam seal. As it didn't seem to rot any less (the opposite in fact) I expect like all these things (eg electric handbrakes!) its for the manufacturers convenience and profit margin rather than any customer benefit. Those tacks are just to hold the seal in plac...

Re: rotating gearshift
Are you sure?
AB is a swing axle box, as is a DA.
DC is the correct code gearbox for a 72 with IRS (sorry Dave, double jointed drive shafts)
Anyway, yes the nosecones are interchangeable, the Type 3 box is just a bit higher geared.

Re: MOT Fail parts needed (Stub axle ?)
You say vertical movement... which isn't really what the adjustment will address - its there for lateral (side to side) play, as are the thrust washers. If its the case that the play is as described then it's more often worn trailing arm bearing surfaces, due to a lack of lubrication. The bearing ne...

I don't know about the modern reproduction ones, but I had some genuine ones and they seemed to look ok (they still scratched the paint though...).
The front vents changed in profile a bit over the years, and between body types, but as far as I know, Notchback rears are all the same.

Re: Headlight Issue
I just noticed your relay has 5 pins. Normally they have 4, so I think that might be the wrong one anyway. Not that I think it's the reason it's failed, just don't panic if the replacement only has 4 connections - that's normal.
