Re: Type 34 door window removal

It's not a straight forward job like it should be, but this might help - you can start at "door panel".

There's also a fixing for the quarter light buried in the seal you may have missed - I did!

Good luck!

Re: Piston & Props

We normally go to this too, and will be again this year I expect. As Tony says, its a great event, with some really interesting machinery on show (American Muscle, F1 cars from the past and not so past, group B Rally, Group C sports prototypes, Race Bikes of all eras etc). The runway doubles as a dr...

Re: Rusty floor pans!

Fronts go as well particularly at the outside edges, but yes the biggest holes are normally at the rear.
Does it need a repair section then, or will it patch up?

Re: Brake problems

May 71 will be the earlier ones.
I have Beetle calipers on both my disc brake cars (nothing else being available at the time) and they work fine.
I think the beetle is a 40mm piston and the Type 3 would be 42mm. I'm not saying there's no difference, but if there is I have not noticed it.

Re: Gaskets, carb to inlet manifold, and manifold to engine

I replied on facebook already, but to save anyone else diving for their parts book.... The paper carb to manifold gasket and the metal manifold to head gasket are both in a standard Aircooled gasket set. I'm going to say that both, but I know at least the metal one is the same as Beetle / Van. They'...

Re: Wipers

Are the conversion devices you are using rated for higher loads like the wiper motor? Most I've seen are just designed for gauges and radios etc. Back in the old days, we used to wire a 6v bulb in series and hide it away somewhere. It might be worth doing that just to check everything else is workin...

Re: Front brakes

OK for front pads, but the rear hoses aren't right for your Type 3. It's a swing axle and uses Type 1 swing axle rear hoses. The parts swap info http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/_docs/type3and4/partswap.htm says the single circuit disc brakes hoses for Aug 66 - July 67 are the same as T1 (Beetle) ...

Re: Type 3 Exhaust Installation ...again!

Dear T3 Friends, I have recently acquired a NOS Lange silencer and tailpipe from the USA for my 1972 FI Notchback. It looks fantastic but before I install I would like to clarify some points (forgive me if I sound stupid but its my first attempt) …. Q1. Do I need to remove the factory painted grey ...

Thanks, not at all... Its been a while since I've had to rebuild an engine, nothing to with reliability, just the lack of use my older VW's get nowadays... I'm sure I used to slap them together with mixed results, so anyone's advice is useful. Anyway with some better measuring, the end float was mor...

Re: more end float...

Thanks Mark, A bit of cross referencing between the manual and parts book and seems to be that as soon as the 'o' ring seal was introduced the metal gasket was discontinued. I confused myself mixing up my 200mm and 12v flywheels, so the manual makes more sense now. It's not quite a 12v / 6v split, b...

I have a similar problem to richtbuiscuits, in that I am a bit tight on end float, but I though I would post a fresh thread rather than hijacking his. Basically, I've rebuilt the internals of an engine into another case with new bearings and a different flywheel so everything is a bit mixed up. In r...

Did you get the brackets with them? If so you attach them so the arm with the gripper on it points forwards and to the inside of the car, with the spreader plate on the other side. The gripper attaches to the inner arch, and the mudflap is fastened to the rear of the wheel arch with 3 self tapping s...

Not normally, unless the bearing is damaged - possible after a long period without lubrication. Radial wear is more commonly the bearing face of the trailing arm as its softer than the rollers in the bearing - you will see a series of ridges across the width of the surface. If better replacement arm...

No, it has nothing.
Its the swan neck type, it should have a bracket welded to the bar to hold the socket on, but it's come off and I don't have it.
That's how I got it.
If you give me your email I'll send some pictures - you can see what I mean then.

Hi, I have a late Westfailia tow bar. It needs a plate for the electric socket reinstating, but apart from that is in good condition. It only has fixings to the bumper mounts, but I used to tow a Pan on a similar tow bar. Anyway, let me know if its of any interest. Also, I use the Halfords cover and...

Re: Heat exchanger to body hose/pipe?

I have a few NOS Left sides, unfortunately that's the short one so can't be modified easily to fit the right.

I've used type 2 ones and (carefully) cut them down in the past, but that was when there were a lot being scrapped.
They are 65mm diameter if that's any help.

Hi & Welcome You could start by looking at this http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/_docs/type3/BuyersGuideType3.htm Rust is probably the biggest issue for UK cars, hence why imports are popular (although they can come with other issues). Also I'm sure you are already aware that Type 3 parts availabil...
