Re: Rear light terminal camp identification

That explains a 'rogue' one I found a while ago (Stonor maybe?). I thought I'd put that odd good one on a light unit, and found it wouldn't fit. I wish I could recall what I did next with it! At least I wouldn't have thrown it away - I never do that.

Re: Not firing on all cylinders

I rarely get a working horn when checking before it goes for MoT. There's been a lot of discussion about '73 horns where the spring contacts on the indicator switch assembly wear through and snag things internally. Unfortunately the 4-spoke steering wheels need a bit of care pulling off the pad as t...

Yes, it's been produced with the cooperation of VW of America and uses many of the official VW manual photos. You'll notice the '68 on manual only deals with fuel Injection - not carbs.

Check the water leaking isn't simply blocked drain tubes. In the UK it's normally not simply that, but leaf and dust debris does get caught at the bend in the rubber tube from the right-hand end of the drain tray.

They're M20 Type B wave washers. I can see them illustrated on the web, but can't see a price anywhere. Maybe the club can buy a bag of 100 or fewer for re-sale.

Re: Throttle cable

The multi-strand ones go for years. I don't think I've ever had a Type 3 one break. Check there's nothing fouling it. I don't think you can over-tighten them without ending with the carb off the stop, but there is a procedure to adjust the clamping position. You need to check that you can get full t...

There are a number of major events the club has a stand and/or line-up at. Danny Lord organises the line-ups Stanford Hall is a major show we are at. How do you get the pistons out? Use a press with a collar on the piston flange? I guess it's all a matter of whether they have damaged the bores, or have serious corrosion. I've several pairs here that have seen better days, but I'm reluctant to label them as scrap until it's obvious they are.

Re: '73 Fastback Project

Just a heads up for others: There arenarrowish channels and a venturi effect on the return pipe into the fuel tank designed to keep the inner 'cup' full even when the tank is nearly empty. Some of the tank sealers can clog that area, and produce symptoms of fuel starvation. While the usual de-rustin...

Re: '73 Fastback Project

Check the leads for resistance - should be about 1000 Ohms. I can't recall which two cylinders the trigger contacts work on at a time, but since the trigger points fire the injectors two at a time, that could be the problem. Sometimes they simply get a bit dirty, but only wipe them clean with maybe ...

Re: Engine Wiring

With a '73 there may be lots of thin wires to the diagnosis socket that aren't needed any more, including a thick red which comes from the battery, and was used to spin the engine over remotely to get an idea of the compression. That was handy for hot-wiring the motor! Just tape any bare ends off if...

I don't think the standard shock absorbers change the ride height at all - they just damp the suspension movement.

Also make sure the earthing strap from engine/gearbox is connected - it could be an earthing fault. Lack of the earth return does funny things. Also check you've got the ignition to terminal 15 on the coil, not 1. I've heard of people losing the ignition when engaging reverse because the coil was co...

Re: 1972 Squareback Door Hinge Pins

Try putting some penetrating oil under the cap of the hinge (if there's still the plastic cap on there. It can be surprisingly effective. Keep working the door open and shut - there's a lot of leverage on it. Unless the hinge pin or hinge drilling is badly worn and allowing the door to drop, it will...

The Cal import should be MPH and miles anyway. The Aussie ones may be KPH.

I've UK spec rear lenses if your MoT tester won't allow amber bulbs behind red plastic.

I've also got a couple of trip speedos in MPH, assuming I can locate them.

Check there's a small gap between the wheel and the switch housing below. There should be a couple of mm gap, which you can adjust by loosening the big allen screws in the housing and moving it down slightly. Mine has a tendency to sound if I have to stop suddenly, and my arms push on the steering w...

Re: Noise From Engine Bay

Hopefully it's just a loose baffle in the silencer, but you may have a loose bolt that is fouling the fan. It makes an unpleasant metallic rattling or grating sound, and sometimes can be intermittent. I've only heard it once when Danny had the problem. If the engine has been apart for overhaul, it's...
