Re: Remove cylinder head with engine in car?
I would say it's a "NO" ! Just getting the exhaust off will be a pain, & the main heat exchanger needs wiggling backwards as you undo the nuts, but it wont come off with the engine support bar in place Single handed engine removal/ replacement is perfectly do-able: make sure you arm yourself with a ...

Does the Horn still work? -That's the only wire You'd expect in that area- Horn would normally be Black/yellow, but maybe the new loom used a different colour?

They don't fit any other Volkswagens, but repair kits & pistons etc are fairly easy to get hold of https://brakeparts.co.uk/shop/VW/Variant/66-74/Variant%201500%20&%201600%20Fastback%20Type%203/Front%20-%20Brake%20Calipers%20and%20Wheel%20Cylinders https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FRONT-BRAKE-CALIPER-REPA...

Check the 12v supply to the cut off jets & that the jets themselves haven't unscrewed themselves.
Also check the connections on the balance pipe

Re: Dynamo wires
You should have a big fat red wire to D+ green to DF And a smaller wire to a screw on the Dynamo body I'd be inclined to polarise the dynamo first too. All wires & fan belt disconnected, DF to Earth, then put a 12V supply to it- Positive to D+ , neg to DF- dynamo should run as a motor but only do th...

Re: type 3 exhaust, silencer vs top heat exchangers
Yes, those are correct- one should be smaller than t'other (to allow for cylinder offset) You've just learnt the easy way to get a knackered silencer off! Plus gas, heat, windy gun & 46mm socket should help, failing that, cold chisel & big hammer on the flats Do you have the crush rings? Don't tight...

Re: type 3 exhaust, silencer vs top heat exchangers
The heat riser can be crimped & cut Heater boxes should fit, assuming they look like items 9 & 10 here: http://www.hallvw.clara.co.uk/type3/T3pbo/T3pb2-12.htm Much easier to fit when not attached to the engine. There's a copper crush ring that sits inside the exchanger-if off the engine its less lik...

Perforations in the steel filler neck are fairly common, which can be brazed up. Also check the J shaped vent pipe
