Carb question

Hello!

Today I rang an engine servicers and asked if they would look at my engine (i want it balanced and timed). they do work on vws.
The guy said that its not worth tuning original solex carbs because they are always worn out.

is this necessarily true?
He wasnt trying to sell me better ones!

heating stopped working!!

ive always had heating in my car, but now, after having the electrics looked at its stopped working.
is there anything I can check or look at to try to get it going again?

I just put a single quiet pack on my square, but I think all the pipes (or whatever they are called) have been changed from stock.

also, i had to squash the valence a bit (poor square) :oops:

it already has caused a fire(!) well that and the fact that my hazzard lights were wired up very wierdly. lots of smoke and melting :(
