Re: Battery keeps going flat
If everything's turned off then there should be no current through any of the fuses. If you take a fuse out and put an ammeter across the terminals, then the ammeter should read zero. If you get a reading, you've got current. If you don't have a suitable ammeter, try an instrument panel bulb (~2 wat...

The reservoir has baffles inside that prevent one a leak on circuit affecting the others. After you've drained the fluid from the duff calliper, you'll see the baffles holding back the fluid for the other two compartment.

Some of the photos posted are very large. If everyone saved their jpeg at around 1024 px wide and at 75% compression, then it would make a huge difference ... and be a lot quicker to upload in the first place.

Mel,
The later Beetle mechanisms are similar but you'll need to curve it to suit the 412. I did a write-up on www.rastall.com/412 | Finishing Off | Electric Windows.

Pic 1 is the bottom of oil filler-cum-dipstick neck where it bolts onto the sump. Pics 4 and 4a are, as you guessed, the air intake for the Ebber combustion chamber. How to cure oil leaks? That's the $64,000 question!!! Simple answer is to remove the fitting, clean hte threads, and re-fit with a new...

You will find the holes pre-formed for the hinges and the catches if you strip off the headlining. If you check out my 412 project pages - the one on "seatbelts" under "finishing off" - the sixth picture down shows the three holes for the catch. There will be a line of holes on the B-pillar for the ...

Re: Gear lever and clutch questions
I was thinking about making up a bracket that would bolt to the floor... You must weld the bracket to the floor else it'll be an MoT failure. I bolted mine back one year and I was told that they don't allow bolts to hold "major controls" ... which is a bit daft since the clutch and brake pedals are...

In future I should really pick projects I have some experience with! If you did that then you'd never learn anything! Every one of us here learned what we have learned by doing things for the first time ... sometimes by the book, sometimes without, and by learning from mistakes. The first engine I ...

Re: Gear lever and clutch questions
I'm a bit concerned as to how much free clutch cable I have. You can see in the first picture it's right on the end of the thread and that's before there's a spring fitted pulling it back further. I'll need to investigate at the pedal end but can the length of cable be increased? It does look a bit...

I find that a liberal squirt of WD40 usually does the trick. It works better if you squire some into the lock barrel before the freeze.

Re: Gear lever and clutch questions
Now a "Clutch lever return spring"... Not sure about that one. The clutch doesn't feel right though so maybe not. Where does the spring live and what does they look like? It fits around the pivot on the outside of the box with a claw that pushes the operating lever towards the back of the car. It p...

Try this site which has the modern current flow diagrams:
http://www.vintagebus.com/wiring/index.html
Take a little while to get used to them but I found them far easier to use for trouble-shooting.

Re: type 3 replacement front windscreen rubber seal
I can vouch for Dave's method, I've had to do that a couple of times, once after a breakage at speed and once when rebuilding. It can be done by one person but it's a lot easier with two! With a curved screen, like the Type 4, the whole bottom edge drops right in place which gives you a flying start...

Re: Cold weather starting
This is a contentious issue! Generally speaking, if you are going to start your engine periodically, you really ought to run it up to full working temperature to get the oil flowing properly round the engine. Trouble is that an air-cooled engine won't warm itself up like a water-cooled one will, it ...

Re: no compression in cylinders 1 and 3???
You'll need to run through the standard checks starting with valve clearances. Odd that it's cylinders on opposite sides, if you'd lost compression in both on the same side, I'd suspect a loose head. If you valve clearances are OK, then you've either got burnt valves or a broken piston ring ... but ...

A similar thing happened to me when my inner wing became porous and I managed to repair the flasher unit. Firstly, 3 or 4 pins ... the 4th pin is for the extra indicator bulb that should light up when you have a trailer or caravan connected as required by our C&U regulations. The unit detects the ex...

Sounds like your solenoid is not retracting. Take the motor off again and check the return spring and check for binding.
