Starter motor

Let's hope it's OK - the brushes tend to stick in the holders if there's muck around - you seem to have a reasonable amount of brush left - they should be clear above the top of the holders to allow the springs to still act on them. Make sure you get a look at the bushing area - the hole should look...

Brian's '71 Green Variant

Wow - that'll be fun to see, not that I expect it will look the same in a couple of years - probably lowered lots, with an individual paint job and a huge tailpipe.

Starter probs

If the idiot light dims as you turn the key to start, all should be well with the switch. If it doesn't dim, the starter switch could be the problem. Hopefully, it's just the motor that needs a clean and a bit of light lubrication. Otherwise it could be the starter motor bushing in the bell-housing....

Sticky starter motor

That sticky starter motor trick eh? It gets us all eventually. The rich people change the starter motor and say that was the problem, the canny clean the commutator and brush area thoroughly, ensure the gear slides freely on the shaft and re-install, getting many more years of use from it. The belt ...

Unusual 1500 Fastback in Thailand

This is one unusual Fastback - a 1969 1500 single-carb. http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/_images/type3/Thai1500FB.jpg I think the window seals may have been replaced at some point, as I'm sure VW never supplied the 'Cal' look seals. Yata says she is very proud of her Fastback, and it shows in the p...

Type 4 daily driver

A Type 4 would certainly appear to be suitable and more stylish than a Eurobox. I would suggest a Type 3 except I am told the rear seat is firm rather than comfortable. Back in the 60s and 70s, VWs were well above average for reliability compared with many other mass-produced cars. VW had a reputati...

UK Registration Letters

Vehicle Registration Letters The original County Councils (C.C.) or County Borough Councils (C.B.C.) of first registration can be found from the last two letters of the letter group (ignore the year letter if there is one). Eg, BLJ 659B is 'LJ' or Bournemouth CBC. Since then, boundary changes have m...

Will's Fastback

Very nice seeing the photos - green with the side trim always seems to look smart (spoken by one with no side trim on his green Variant!).
I should know this, but how come the Dorset reg and LHD? Was this a personal import or sourced via a third party?

Battery Care

Here's a few tips for keeping batteries working OK:- Keep terminals clean and connectors tight and greased with vaseline When changing a battery , undo and spread the clamp apart a bit so it goes down the full length of the terminal post. Tighten the clamp. Never hammer the clamp onto the post - th...

Repairing Type 3 clocks; Adding a Quartz movement

The electro-mechanical ('clunk' type):- This has a solenoid to wind a spring, and a pair of contacts which gradually get closer together as the clock winds down, then when they finally touch, the solenoid is energised with a 'clunk' as it winds the spring up. It does this about every minute or so. ...

Paint Colour Codes

All the Type 3 and Type 4 paint codes are shown with year and model in use, and a colour chip, which is reasonably close on my monitor. Type 34 Karmann Ghias generally used a different colour range, and some Beetle and Type 2 colours are not in this list. If you are still in any doubt on the colour,...
