Re: 412LS Variant, on her way back
Shawn, many thanks for the compliment, glad you like them. They do look better on the car than I expected so am pleased with my short term solution. I'll need to get hold of some ET41's if I want to make it original again. Lots of other things to be worked on in the meantime Peter, the advice on par...

Gearbox Ratios
I was messing about in Excel last night and created the following charts which show the road speed against engine speed for the type 4. I sourced the data from the Haynes manual and assumed a 165/80 tyre size for the variant and 155/80 for the saloon. They are derived from the following mph/1000 rpm...

Re: 412LS Variant, on her way back
Thanks for the comments  Earlier today I got the new tyres fitted to a set of Revolution RFX alloys I bought last week (they remind me of a mix between Porsche Cookie Cutters and Cup 1 alloys) and took her out for a spin. I'm happy to say that I clocked up over 50 miles without incident, a...

Re: Steel Wheels
The wheels from VW Heritage are the ET34 Beetle specification. I have had my ruler and straight edge out again today and have updated the measurements above for all three wheels designs. Below are a couple of photos showing the difference in the rim edge design between the ET34 and ET41 sizes. I was...

Re: 411L info
Great news, another barn find, except yours was in your own barn. :) I've had my current 412LS for a month or so, it's now taxed & tested and taking to the UK roads for the first time in 22 years tomorrow. In my case it was known to the club, but not known to DVLA as like yours was not in use when S...

Re: What fuel do you use ?
Thanks for the additional information, I am familiar with the cars Paul Grayson & Johnny Cocker have beern campaigning. It's quite easy to build a new car to handle high ethanol content in fuel at minimal additional cost. Much more difficult for cars which were designed some years ago with different...

Re: Steel Wheels
A little bit more of an update; two more wheels being treated this evening. From looking at the markings with the paint removed it seems not all my wheels are the same. As I have taken some measurements I thought I would share them while a coat of paint is drying Wheel 1. Seemed to be marked up as a...

It might be helpful is you could clarify which fuel pipe you mean. Tank to pump ? pump to carb ?.
Sorry I can't help too much as I don't have a Type 3, but I think it's 5mm

Re: Steel Wheels
Here's the result of my first attempt. I chose the OSR, the most heavily rusted wheel http://937carrera.co.uk/IMAG0020sm.jpg It's no masterpiece, and I realised after the shops shut that I should have bought some filler primer for the outer rim area in addition to the zinc primer, but at least it's ...

Re: HAREWOOD HOUSE VW Festival, Leeds, 16-18 August
I'm going to be at Harewood House, in the 412, excepting unforseen circumstances. It would be great to meet up with some of the other members here. Who else is planning on making the visit ? I think it'll just be a day trip for me, so which day will be best. I'll be hoping to have a rumage for spares

I'm currently renovating my wheels. I'm not sure how nice they will come out, or how long they will last yet. I was toying with the idea of getting some new ones, so could I ask for your thoughts please Size. My car is a 412, which I believe is a 4.5J ET 41 wheel. I thought they would be the same as...

412LS Variant, on her way back
Now my car is off the trailer I thought I should put some current photos up for you. These were taken just after the MOT (she passed) :D :D :D , so now the key mechanicals etc are sorted I intend to use her a little this year before getting the body done properly over the winter. Cosmetically I need...

Re: What fuel do you use ?
Judi is correct on the compression ratio and output, but my handbook says 98 RON on page 42, and the sticker inside the petrol flap says 98 RON too. That's the reason why I asked the question in the context of 4 star petrol. I wholeheartedly agree with broady_6 about BP ultimate and V-Power, and I d...

I used to get 17-18 mpg out of my 412LE, type 3's were always more economical, unless driven by me (or Marko)

Re: 412 with 1800-AN engine, ignition timing & idle question
Thanks Judi, that was helpful. I have done the throuttle stops, the right one needed about 3/4 of a turn for them to be exactly synced My balance pipe elbows are perished, so I tried using some partially bored out 3/8" pipe as a substitue, but the angle was too great and it was kinking, probably sto...

Re: 412 with 1800-AN engine, ignition timing & idle question
I think I'm making progress. After studying the sticket on the fan housing carefully, it seems that the red line is the 7.5 degree BTDC mark, while around 2 1/2 fan blades to the left there is a TDC 0 mark, which was only visible static under intense light. At least I think it was there. I have now ...

Parts Catalogues
Some of you lucky people seem to have access to an (electronic) parts catalogue. It would be really useful if I could get access to one to help me find the parts I need.
If you don't mind, where did you get yours ???
I "think" I have a microfiche reader in the loft, so could even use old tech

What fuel do you use ?
Simple question as title really, though I know I am about 15 years late in asking the question. Last time I filled up a 412 it would have been with proper 4 star. As that is no longer available, what do people use. I assume it's Shell V-Power, but perhaps also Tesco Momentum which has a higher octan...

412 with 1800-AN engine, ignition timing & idle question
I have been trying to get my 412LS running better. As bought it would hardly start and wouldn't tick over, there didn't seem to be a fast idle I have checked the plugs, reset points and timed the engine using a timing lamp. The fast idle cam seems to be working correctly, without raising the revs. T...

Re: Fuel Gauge, type 4
Thanks for the explanation about the zenier diode. I'm still not sure that the gauge is fully fixed because I don't understand why it is stabilising the voltage at 5.2v :?: I'll need to wait until I buy some more petrol to have a view about how accurate the gauge is :) Thanks for everyones help, now...

Re: Fuel Gauge, type 4
Problem sorted :) I think. A few learnings from this little job, at least for me The original reading of 5.2v at the + terminal of the sender unit is correct. I found a really useful page at http://type2.com/library/misc/vwggauge.htm which allowed me to do additional diagnostic tests. It seems the f...

Re: Fuel Gauge, type 4
Ah, you have a diagram that shows what I remember - I had to clean the sender wires on one of my first 412's too, that was 30 years ago. If you wanted to "tune" the gauge, then perhaps all that would be needed would be a small resistor in series, so long as the gauge is overreading ? I'm now more co...

Fuel Gauge, type 4
The fuel gauge is not working on my 412. I expected it would be the sender unit so removed the carpet and cover, but before removing the sender unit checked for voltage and only 5.2 volts was showing. I looked at the wiring diagram, and it seems current flows from terminal 15 to the feed on the gaug...

Re: Petrol Filler Flap
Is this type 3 or type 4 ? If it's type 4 I'll let you know when I have fixed mine. It opens OK but will not close because the finger/latch is at too steep an angle for it to retract when the flap closes. At the moment I have to put my hand under the wing to partially retract the latch and close the...
