2-door Type 4s
I can count only two 412s with 2-doors recorded here, one is VIW 412 and the other has no number. 23 others don't have whether they are 2 or 4 door Sedans. How many of any Type 4 model still survive is a mystery too, and some of these must have been scrapped by now. The 2-door versions are certainly...

The problem seems to be that you can't always use the URL of another forum or a private photo gallery. No problem if they are on the internet in the normal way with normal access. Do they end with .jpg, .gif or is it something else?
Give me the URL and I'll see if there's a way to do it.

Gaskets
That's a shame to spend so much time and effort and have it fail again. Having seen the simplicity of using just the normal manifold gasket, I have to wonder why that could go wrong. George T found it worked. If the thread in the heat exchanger is not clean I suppose it may not wind tight. VW said t...

Upper heat exchanger gaskets
4) from Stuart should be more like 1and5/8" bore, but it's a metric standard size of copper pipe apparently - need to be an industrial plumber to use it and have some scrap I guess. Latest suggestion, and probably the easiest really, is to cut down a couple of manifold gaskets - same requirement - j...

Converting Wipers from 6V to 12V
Anyone give advice on what to do with the wiper motor. I've heard of:-
Get an autoelectrician shop to rewind the armature for 12V;
Fit the '67/68 12V motor which apparently goes straight in;
Fit a voltage dropper circuit (not just a big resistor!)
Any other realistic possibilities?
Dave.

We've looked at the link - it doesn't end in .gif or .jpg so can't recognise it as an image. Still, it loads as a link when clicked - best we can do, sorry.

If you have the image on the web somewhere, type the URL here, or copy and paste it if there's a lot of it, highlight and click the img box above the typing box, and it should link automatically. A few "do-nots" though:- 1) No spaces in the URL - replace each space with %20 to save changing the imag...

Some photos of a recent VW meeting in France - have we been missing out on a good meeting? http://users.skynet.be/am250534/thenay640/thenay2005.htm This one looks just like Larry and Lin's apart from the five wheels. ;-) http://users.skynet.be/am250534/thenay640/Image024_jpg_view.htm http://www.fast...

Not near Bristol by any chance, Clem? I'd love to find one of those places. There's an area reserved for Airbus in the aero museum I help with, but I can't persuade them that dry storage of old VWs would be beneficial to Airbus! I was at Coventry airfield today - there's a light-plane there G-CLEM. ...

You don't know how lucky you are having a late Fastback without the air vents by the rear window. I'm tempted to blend in mine in the '72.

Wasserboxer engine in Type 3
http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/_images/type3/PaulCwasserboxer.jpg Here's what can be done - 2.1 litre higher than stock spec cam, super-light flywheel, twin 40s, optronic ignition, etc and is knocking on the door of 130BHP. 76mm stroke and 94mm pistons and 10:1 compression with hydraulic lifters...

1971 Variant
Well done, Clem. I think it's a good one - Lionel asked for various help over the years he's owned it, and it has several things he made on it - a fuel-filler flap release for example. He made a replacement one from a new one I lent him as a pattern, and he's made bushes to replace the unavailable f...

Windscreen-rubber trim
It has to be in the rubber and that fitted to the screen before putting the whole assembly in.
I can't really see any other way of doing it. Can you face taking it all out again?

Screen sealer
I used a runny liquid that is applied through a bendy plastic nozzle (like a 3-in-1 oil-can). You can push the nozzle behind the rubber lip to dispense it. It certainly helped on the Jetta (Polo? can't recall which). It's not the thick goo, but you can use that - just have some approproate solvent f...

Water leaks
You've found water up under the dash, so that's a pretty certain diagnosis now. When you think that water seeping in at the top of the screen rubber can build up a 2-foot head of water, it's not that surprising it gets inside. The better the bottom is sealed, the more comes in. Make sure you run som...

Auto-starters
Auto starters are rated slightly higher (0.8hp instead of 0.7hp I think). I suppose as problems can arise in the bushing, it would make the auto ones marginally more reliable as they don't use the bushing. The pre-engaging mechanism relies on brush contact being good, and that certainly is the same ...

Starter
Best not to touch the field coils - I'm not even sure I took a look when pulling my starter apart. If they're dirty, it shows they weren't touched by the armature - that's good. If the tranny is later, that should be OK. Surprising to change to the auto starter if so - maybe working to a formula. Is...

Auto starter
Never had an auto starter apart. So yours is converted to 12V. They get round the bush not being the same for 12V as for 6V - the 6V starter motor is fatter (I think it's that way round) in the shaft, so the bush has a (bigger?) hole - by fitting a 12V auto starter. If the bearing came apart, it can...
