Re: Membership

Welcome! I do apologise for the delays - when we had half a dozen new members per week, things had to move more quickly, but without the regular magazines etc, with all the work and cost that entailed, we find the forum takes most of the load, and the relatively few who need or wish to be members is...

Re: Re-Fitting glass with new seals.

The Type 3 body manual actually talks about a sealant being used, but with clean openings and new rubber, it isn't strictly needed. There are solutions that track into small spaces if you find it's leaking. Liquid soap is another possible lubricant, but certainly avoid washing-up liquid which is bul...

Re: Taking Suspension back to factory

Wear in the lower torsion arms seems a bit of a hit and miss thing. The front beam in a Variant I'd had from 30,000 miles which had been serviced meticulously by an engineer were badly worn at the inner ends when I finally scrapped the car at 90-odd thousand miles, and I had kept it greased regularl...

That car is in the museum at Wolfsburg. If anyone knows, Jane and Bryan might. I'll see if there's mention in the M options in the parts book.

Re: In car heating.

It's not very common for Type 3 heat exchangers to leak exhaust fumes, though sometimes there's fumes drawn in around rusty casings. Sniff the outlets and if you smell exhaust, don't use the heater until you get it mended. The slider knobs on the A posts send hot air to the footwells or the screen. ...

BRISTOL VOLKSFEST 15-17 JUNE

Hello, just giving you some info on the Bristol Volksfest. It's at Birches Farm, Long Ashton. There are maps on the site at http://www.bristolvolksfest.co.uk/ and you can look up prices etc on there. We have a club plot booked, thanks to Larry and Lin, though not a club camping area, and you're welc...

Re: Front beam refurb.

Front beam: check the suspension ball joint rubber boots for damage. If torn the joint has probably got road grit in it and need replacing. It's not very easy to check for wear when disassembled. OTOH it's easier to replace them when apart. Unless care was taken to compress the torsion arms together...

Re: Master cylinder fluid leak

The drillings in the brake switch holes are larger than the holes to the brake pipes. I've heard it makes it less likely for air to remain in the switch.

It's actually 9.5 x 1000 but typically the other size is supplied by the usual suspects. Last time I looked Halfords had the part.

Re: Carbs, rebuild or replace

One adjustment does the mixture and the other the idle speed. Just work out which does which. Get it to run, then adjust the mixture on one making it weaker (screw in?) and it will run faster until it starts running slower, then go back slightly richer. Do the same on the other carb. Check the first...

Re: Help - I kow nothing about my car!!!

Sounds like Betty has only been idle for 9 months, and was running after you got back from abroad, so it may not be anything too awful. Type 3s didn't originally come with fuel filters, apart from the Fuel Injection models, where it's under the front axle on the fuel pump. The carbed models have a f...

Fastback Inspection needed in Leighton Buzzard

Hi, I've had an email from a Fastback owner who is having trouble over its registration as it's the old style blue V5, not the V5c. It has been stored for over 30 years; If anyone is in a position to take a look at it in Leighton Buzzard on behalf of the club, that would be helpful. PM me if you can...

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback

Hmm, lots of panels even for my '59 Beetle, but pricey after the almost free metal bashing on a Type 3! The engine is a bit too different from later ones though, but I've a couple of 30hp to make one OK one from - got to get started on the usual body bits first though.

Re: Rear window mystery

Interesting - I've never seen that aero-back concept before (apart from other manufacturers). There's a big estate car with 6-cylinder rear air-cooled engine in the VW Museum in Wolfsburg. I'll have to dig out my photos to see if that's 5-doors, and the EA number.

Hope you get it done before your knees and hips get creaky and everything stiffens up (or not as the case may be). I can report that WD40 doesn't work on seized-up human bodies!

Re: Master cylinder fluid leak

Are you sure that the M/C is compatible with a 4-disc system? The rear shoe system is designed to hold residual pressure to ensure the shoes don't have to move far to produce braking force, while disc calipers need to depressurise to let the seals pull the pads back from the discs to ensure the disc...

Re: Front ball joint bolts

I'm not sure the proper bolt is available, as it's a Type 3 part. Unfortunately unless the old bolt is removed with the torsion bar tension reduced by clamping the torsion arms closer together, the bolt thread is irreparably damaged, assuming the bolt doesn't actually shear. The shank of the bolt is...

Re: Gunson carbalencer

I use a section of the large rubber petrol hose with the carbalancer, as It fits the carb tops nicely. However, the owner of my previous twin carb Variant soldered small tubes into the air filter tops above the carbs, sealed with tyre-valve caps. I made a simple U-tube manometer from clear plastic t...

Easy enough to smear a bit of the rubber grease on and may help the grommet to seal better. I've not heard of the problem before. Obviously you've checked for bits of flashing on the grommets or obstructions in the m/c machining.

It's usually fairly obvious if your brakes aren't working evenly - try some gentle braking and more fierce and see how it affects the steering. It used to be reassuring as those dials rose evenly, and highlighted the difference in front and rear braking force, but now it all goes into the laptop, it...
