Re: Auto box failure
Stuart - first thing to check is whether there are signs of any leakage from the gearbox end - as opposed to the differential end. Check that the vacuum is connected to the engine. They are quite sensitive to oil level - read up online on how to check oil level with car running - half a litre of ATF...

Re: steel wheels
best to get the wheels first and then measure up if you want max tyres. i would say 4.5 on front and 5.5j on back - ideally with ET42 wheels. depending on what look you're after - a tried and tested would be 195/65/15 on back and 145/15 on front for classic stance - prob get fatter tyres on but best...

yup - they used one of the 4x130 holes and drilled 4 new ones at 130 on centre - they marked everything out for me.

Re: convert from 4 stud to 5 x 130
I had my discs and hubs re-drilled - most competent engineering companies will do this for you - fairly easily. If you take the M14 x 1.5 studs along with you they will also press fit them for you too. couple of pics of mine - you can also buy front discs in 5x130 pattern and the rear hubs put they ...

Re: Automatic selector problem
you can adjust the cable at the gearbox end - put it in park and take slack out at rear of car - I think I googled it when I rebuilt the car - there were some instructions from an original vw service manual that described it in more detail but should not be sinister - just need to adjust - good lck

Re: fuel tank
Couple of pics - not the best unfortunately but it does fit the hole. I did actually cut the filler to clear the front bulkhead rather than make a hole in bulkhead - if you look at a picture of an early car you will see how it routes originally - works for me :-) http://imageshack.com/a/img913/6226/...

Re: fuel tank
i used an early tank in my 1970 car. I did this mainly due to preferring not to have a filler flap on the outside and all the pipe work (rust traps). Works well but you need to lift the bonnet at fuel stations

Re: Brake bits and 5/130 pattern
you can buy re drilled hub and drum for rear and buy 130x5 porsche discs for front.
try machine 7 for fronts - type 3 detectives used to re-drill rears and few places in US sell rear kits
avoid using converters on rear due to offset -

i think a company called harrigtons do sell polished stainless bumpers for early and late type 3s but they are pricey...

Re: advise
5 stud vw conversions are expensive if you want the original 205x5 porsche pattern 130x5 is a cheaper option and porsche wheels tend to have a good offset for the type 3 if you stick with vw 4 stud and want a useable low car rather than a scraper I would look for wheels that have a large offset - st...

Re: 1973 Fastback reverse lights
There should be a blank if not fitted - google will help you :-) Essentially - the reverse lights are fed 12v from the coil or local ignition source and the switch earths them when switch pushed by rod inside gearbox. Sell the lights for 10.00 each - they are both very good - can send you some pics ...

Re: Tarboard / Firewall
not sure you can still buy the original tarboard but most people now replace with a improved product that reduces noise and vibration and is self adhesive and quite flexible for fitting into corners and around edges - can also be cut with strong scissors. found a link for 10 sheets of silent coat - ...
