Millers make good oils, but you shouldn't be using single grade, 20W50 or 15W50 should be fine.

If it works with a direct cable to the solenoid connection then the starter is fine, it's the cable from the ignition switch to the solenoid that has deteriorated. Well that is a surprise............ I suppose now I'll have to admit doing the same thing, flat battery but coil still absolutely fine. Figure that out, I can't.

It doubt it will have been on for 8 hours, the battery probably went flat before then. I'd agree coil will be burnt out, I wouldn't expect there would be other damage. Fingers crossed.
