Re: Ignition timing, advance & retard - how it works

A very comprehensive and useful contribution. I have captured that as a Word document for future reference.

There's an online manual for the heater at Type4.org here: https://www.type4.org/manuals/ba4/index.html

Re: Brake switch

If you have a dash warning light then you need 3-pin switches on both parts of the master cylinder. There's a wiring diagram in the Haynes manual which explains all.

Re: Auto box failure

... I understand its usually a consequence of the plates partly drying out after a period of non use and fragments coming off that can block the valve body affecting pressures. How long a period of non use is involved here? I haven't moved my 412 auto for a couple of months or so and I had noticed ...

Just a thought ... depending on the year, the light switch has a dimmer action for the instrument lights. You do have this turned clockwise ... don't you???

Re: Daily driver?

I use my 412 Variant as my main car ... it's actually the only roadworthy car I currently have. Having said that, I live in a smallish village and don't use it every day ... probably once or twice a fortnight. I shall be driving to Peterborough this weekend which is a 4-hour round trip on a good day...

The absolute length isn't important. You need to set 1mm or so free play so that the master cylinder is not preloaded at rest.

Re: How many left?

I am guilty of scrapping VYJ45M, a 4-door LS Fastback that I bought in Scotland. The amount of salt used on the roads there wasn't kind and it was "as rotten as an egg" underneath. It lives on in spirit in my project ... it donated the rear door frames ...

Re: Towing with an automatic?

The original type 4 owner's manual says you should ask your dealer to make an adjustment to the box before towing ... I expect knowledge of the adjustment has become lost in the mists of time ... unless anyone can turn up a workshop manual on the subject?

Re: Centring the steering wheel

The only way to find the central position for the steering box is to turn the steering wheel (not the road wheels) to one lock, then count the turns to the opposite lock, then turn back exactly half. If the steering wheel is not central, then reposition it; if it is central, then adjust the track ro...

Re: Centring the steering wheel

If the garage adjusted the tracking for you it's possible they did it the lazy way and adjusted only one track rod. Both should be adjusted together to keep the steering wheel centralised. You can correct this yourself by turning both track rods equally, lengthen one and shorten the other. Start by ...

The white 412 in the background is my "other" 412, the Californian left-hooker. The blue one is my project car which is still awaiting my attention. I was the only Type 4 there and there were no Type 3s at all.

That is my old car. Sorry, it's not a special edition, it's a perfectly standard spec Fastback saloon ... at least it was when I had it from 2000 to 2006, it's been worked on since! It was car of the month in VolksWorld for June 2008.

Remember to tighten the gaiters with the vehicle on the ground so that it is preloaded properly. That reduces the amount of flexing each way.
