Re: Insurance

I have just left Adrian Flux because they were asking too much at my renewal. I'm now with Footman James and I have my Beetle and my 412 on a multi-car classic policy with them with unlimited mileage for about the same as AF were asking for one car!

Re: Throttle cable problems

There is a solid tube to flexible connection where it comes out of the back of the bulkhead under the rear seat. That's your most likely location for it getting stuck.

Re: Wipers not parking on a 68

The parking brake mechanism is designed to allow time for the blades to stop when working at normal speed on a wet screen. If you're testing on a dry screen then the extra friction will make them stop more quickly, ie, early.

After checking a bit further, I believe this might be for a 411/412 but for the models fitted with a brake servo. I certainly won't do for standard, unassisted brakes.

If you mean eBay item no 280756529488 then it isn't a 411/412 brake cylinder. At a wild guess, maybe a T4 (transporter) cylinder?

Re: headlight switch wiring and ignition wiring (terminal X?

The X terminal of the light switch is used for the headlight feed. When you turn the ignition switch to start the engine, the headlights go out to give more power to the starter motor. The switch was a later addition and is otherwise identical. If your switch doesn't have the X factor, then the blac...

If you don't split the case, you won't find those sort of bits in the bottom of the engine. Bluebay's receipts are for a top rebuild only.

Re: Oh dear look what I found !

That looks like the remains of a broken piston (ask me how I know) which suggests an interesting history. If the engine is running well now, then the chances are that the repairs were carried out properly but ... Depends on how the piston was broken - did it hit a dropped valve, for instance? That s...

Re: new website

One quick comment: your parts listing is just that, a long list that straggles over several pages. You have split your categories at top level into two types of campers, Beetles and 'other'. But then we have to trawl through to see what might be there. I would be more encouraged to look if they were...

Re: Couple of easy questions...

Some distributors had a compensating second vacuum connection to another point on the induction manifold which acted on the other side of the diaphragm. It was a short-lived modification to adjust the ignition timing for emission control, if I remember rightly. If the blanked-off connector on the se...

Re: Dashtop speaker

As Mike implies, you won't get stereo out of a single central speaker - not sure where you'd put another to give a sensible stereo effect. Personally speaking I reckon stereo is a waste of time in most cars, especially a Historic VW! Unless you spend at least twice the value of the car on the sound...

I usually manage to watch my Beetle go through its MoT and yes, the wheels will lock up on the rollers under test. The machine seems to detect this and goes into a release and re-try mode but it can't cope with the front axle in standard trim. At my last visit, the tester said Beetles were always li...

Nice write-up but superficial - no real depth. I too wonder how they assessed the club backup. I would also put DIY maintenance at 5/5 but I do have an LS!

Re: Odd noise question - gear lever!

This is a job worth not putting off. If you lean on the gear stick to stop a rattle, you are putting continuous pressure on the selector fork inside the gearbox, which will accelerate the wear on that.

Or you could choose a type that assists the existing points and thus stops them wearing down and needing frequent adjustment. Electronic Ignition systems come in different guises.
