Wow!

Now that's impressive - wouldn't bother to do all that to any of my cars, as I've never been one for decorations. I can appreciate the effort though, and it all goes together well, and at least Paul at T3D will be able to afford a bit more globe-trotting for parts now.

Well done!

Dashboard leaks

I'm not sure of the arrangement on the early dash, but the later one has a drain tray for the water that gets in the louvres. If the outlet tube gets blocked, it can spill over into the air box, or behind the dash if there is rust between the tray and the bulkhead bulge. The two drain hoses, one fro...

Type 3 and Type 4 bumpers

The rear bumpers are the same. The front are not; the Type 4 is much more rounded at the front. I think I've seen the odd Type 3 with a front Type 4 bumper, but I don't think you could fit a Type 3 on a Type 4. The other thing to appreciate is that the big Type 3 front bumper up to '71 has a straigh...

I don't see why not - GSF used to sell the universal ones; probably still do.

£78 for the cheaper ones (refurbished?), £135 for better quality (new?), both complete with valves. Less 10% if you have their club discount card, but add VAT.

To swage or not to swage - that is the question.

The swages are in a flat area - I imagine they are needed to stiffen the panel. If you are capable of rolling the swages in the panel, I am impressed - maybe there are some repair panels we could get you to make! Not many people get to see this panel - most of it hides behind the fuel tank. I doubt ...

Carb Overhaul II

http://www.gasure.co.uk/solex.htm may be a possibility if you have leaking throttle shafts; they put Viton seals on them at £25 a pair. they also recon the carbs at £100 a pair. We have no feedback on them so far, so this is not a recommendation yet - please let us know of your dealings by adding th...

There can be. 311 101 375 with any suffix should be OK for twin carbs. Main differences are presence or not and position of the head temp sensor for the Fuel Injection. I think I used the 043 101 375A 'universal' heads for the FI Fastback, and drilled and tapped for the CHT. These had a squish ledge...

Posting Event Info - please read first!

You're welcome to post relevant events here - in fact, please do! It is for Type 3 and Type 4, so no specialist watercooled events please. If you are going to a local meeting with your Type 3 or 4, eg a general classic car event, you're welcome to include that too. I will put them into a diary forma...

Type 3 Parts availability

As with most 40-year old classic cars, parts availability can be tricky, but there are quite a few enthusiasts still around and there's no good reason for any of the Type 3s to have to be scrapped. OTOH you will find that unless you can do much of the work, a rusty example will probably not be econo...

Sticky starter

From miketype3:- I've been having trouble starting the Notchback lately. It's been an intermitent problem up until this year, but now it plays up pretty much all the time. The symptoms are:- After a good run where the engine has got up to temperature, the starter will refuse to turn. It's fine immed...

Type 3 Brake Pads for 72-73

Searching through old club publications:- The pad for the normal 72-73 Type 3 and 411 caliper is the same as REAR pads on all 75-90 Volvo 240s, says Per Lindgren, Norway, who should know as he has a 73 Variant L. GSF seem to have them; look at Volvo then brake (actually looks like '78-'92 though). h...

Hmm - you're right - it should link. It does from the browser.

It won't even do it as a URL. Something's wrong. I'll ask the expert!....

Yet another Type 4?

So, what does Shannon think of that? I guess she's too busy with the little one to notice. I had as similar rash of buying some years ago - now I've sold one (camper) and scrapped another (Polo), but bought a newer Polo to replace it as my Gopher. It looked a mess, was cheap, but looks much better w...

Picture posting

There's advice on this on the Information and Updates forum - you need to have the photo on the web somewhere already, and it mustn't be in a password-protected site or we don't get to see it! I want to avoid putting photos in our webspace - it would quickly grow too big to afford the bandwidth. Sor...

Spluttery engine

Welcome to sanity, Iain! Chuck away the 009. It was originally used in a constant speed running in a stationary engine, with centrifugal advance only. It was favoured by racer types who do run their engines in one narrow rev range - flat out! It isn't flexible for normal road use where you don't wan...

Northern Shows

Sounds good to me. Usually more people want to talk about how to mend and restore their cars than admire the beautiful concours ones. You may find people offer some of the parts you will need, too.

Southern bias in club activities?

It's always seemed a shame we haven't managed to get much going 'oop north'. The major shows tend to be in the middle or south-east, so they're 150 miles for me anyway, and our Cornish cousins can double that. The Club has always offered support, free show passes etc for people able to do a stand at...

Adjusting Dual Carbs

Actually, fiddling with Type 3 or 4 twin carbs isn't all it's cracked up to be. There is a healthy balance pipe (2 in some cases) that means they run at higher revs pretty evenly even if one is badly out. Idle is a different matter, but really if you can adjust a Beetle's single carb, you can do the...

Burning oil

Welcome to your Type 3 and the club forum, Mim. VW say oil light flickering is not a sign of imminent failure, but it does suggest the engine has some wear. No big problem as long as it goes out the moment you move above idle rpm. Hot days will make it more likel, and so will a low idle rpm. 850 +/-...

Oregon 2006

Hi Brian,
Err, me drive a Type 4? Well, I have driven one before, on a farm in Kent (the UK spiritual home of the Type 4). We had some reversing game with a long farm trailer. I think it went OK.
I've found another Type 4 owner in Oregon - Jim Denton. I've passed your details to him.
Dave.

Heat exchanger gaskets

I found similar gaskets are used on some aero-engines, though our size is in the caralogue, it doesn't seem to be stocked. I've got a company named Whitby and Chandler in Sheffield who can apparently make these up in smallish batches. Something to follow up if they are going to be a resonable price....
