Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
I felt like Kim Il after a successful nuclear test launch today :D Fired up nicely, just need to finish the wings and pop them back on for a road test. Mr Plod would not take too kindly to me driving with no wings or doors  Thanks Mr Broady, looks nice and neat, the way it should. Whats the...

Looks like I found a decent pic of a clean layout here. And Bobnotch's comment about
running the fuel line through the body tin instead of the engine tin is worth a look.
I always brought the fuel line through the front tinware.

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Had a chance to remove plug number 3 again today, to change the end to suit my plug caps. It was a breeze through the wheel well. Nice and gentle and all went well. And reinstalling the plug with a gentle shaking twisting motion to get it started properly. Light over head in the engine bay gives gre...

Perhaps one of you kind gents could point me in the direction of a picture that could show the best option
for organising the rats nest of wiring that normally sits, hidden underneath the air filter.
I,ve done a few googles but cant seem to find a decent pic. And cleanliness is next to godliness

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Fitting new plugs today, and the usual number 3 plug was going to be tricky as it always is. But the car being on the mid rise lift with the wheel off, made things surprisingly simple. First time to do the plug this way. It was usually mallet fingers trying to pass around and under the carb, kicking...

Thanks guys. Thats the beauty of belonging to a great site, proper no nonsense answers in a prompt fashion. I thought they might be that, but could not find it on any of the wiring diagrams I had. Of now to your link Mr Broady_6 to refresh my self and bring my sparse knowledge on the diag plug up to...

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Near ready, all the wiring connected, starter, regulator and generator. But left with 2 odd looking wires at the starter area, coming from the engine bay. From the engine bay area, the two cable harness runs from left to right, and out through a hole into the starter area. Not sure yet whether they e...

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
You learn something every day. I had to change the oil inlet pipe on the engine I was fitting, from the previous engine. I never knew there was any difference. But the pipe that was on the engine was way out of line with the oil filler cap. And the original pipe fitted perfect. The two are clearly d...

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
I picked up this exhaust very cheaply from a guy who was having a shed clearout, and did not know exactly what he had. Sounds great, and is a heavy bit of kit. I am thinking of steel universal flexible piping. But I,ll cross that bridge when I come to it Also picked up 2 genuine VW NOS exhausts ( se...

Re: Cooling Flaps return spring.
There is no way the spring can fully open the flaps if the thermostat is stuck closed.
It will partially open.
I,d love to fit the sodding spring, if I had one. Thats why I,m asking these questions about the spring,
to find a work around.

Re: Cooling Flaps return spring.
So basically the spring is for taking up the slackness of the connections of the flap to rod, rod to lever arm, lever am to spring, and spring to flap, thereby maintaining connectivity of all the important elements. Makes perfect sense now, any vibration here could disconnect the flaps from the rod,...

Re: Cooling Flaps return spring.
But couldn't you just set the same amount of opening on the flap, with the connecting rod, and leave the spring off. Even with the thermostat in the cold position, there is very little pressure from the spring, and the flap is adjusted with the horizontal rod to maintain a small opening. Spring on o...

Re: Cooling Flaps return spring.
Good article here that I have just found https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=510828&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=thermostat+temp&start=0 Clearly shows the connections of the substantial spring. But the spring looks to be pulling the flap open a bit. And the thermostat pushes it o...

Re: Cooling Flaps return spring.
So spring pulls them closed, and thermostat pushes them open. But thermostat also pulls them closed when its cool and contracting ?? Academic because I dont have one on either engine. How strong is it, is it stronger than a carb pull down spring? Anyone ever arrive at a fix with an alternative. Thanks

Cooling Flaps return spring.
Quick question regarding the return spring. Exactly where does the return spring attach to. The door flap end is straight forward. But where at the thermostat top link plate area is it attached. Is this spring absolutely necessary, given that the thermostat, expands and contracts, effectively openin...

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
I found the empi case savers to be a serious bit of kit for this type of issue. What with it being a 14 x 2 OD, its a solid grip into the case. I have also seen some listed case savers as 14 x 1.5 , but my supplier had the 14 x 2 case savers, so I went for them, and he is a vw supplier. Is there any...
