Re: 53 Year old Barnfind, running.
I thought as much, thanks. I was checking on some repair kits today for the car, and its nearly as cheap to replace the caliper. Although I would prefer original german calipers. But beggars cant be choosers.

Re: 53 Year old Barnfind, running.
Engine is now back in the car, with that nasty bodge fixed. https://i.imgur.com/eBw10RK.jpg https://i.imgur.com/qbQuaon.jpg https://i.imgur.com/7gY3gbd.jpg Need to check the brake calipers now tomorrow. I have been told the 67 calipers with 56mm bolt distance is the same as the later beetles Is that...

Re: 1967 VW Variant
I managed to undo the bodge on the cooling flaps that were jammed open. I sorted all the parts from my stash, including a thermostat from a 1600 type 2 engine that I had. I checked it over and its working perfectly. The only part that I did not have was the horizontal rod from the flap to the rotati...

Re: 53 Year old Barnfind, running.
If you look closely at the photograph you can see that the flap has been bent and clenched around the cooling shroud casing,
to hold it open. First class bodgery in my opinion. Its really simple to fit a new thermostat as we all know.
The right way is often the quckest, simplest, best option.

Re: 53 Year old Barnfind, running.
I am still at a loss to figure out the bodgery on the cooling flaps in order to keep them permanently open. Its not like Irelands climate is anything like sub saharan africa. Of course when it comes to the heating and cooling of both engine and car in a VW aircooled driven vehicle, you are guarantee...

Re: 53 Year old Barnfind, running.
Yeah, being optimistic, thats what I am hoping. I have checked the wear limits on the pistons, barrels, and the end float so far, and its all great. I have a good internal camera that I am gonna hook up to the laptop, and give the internal a good scrutiny as well as I can. If I see any wear that con...

Re: 53 Year old Barnfind, running.
Just managed to clean up the engine number boss. Its T 002822 R. Which puts it at between Aug and Dec 1965 as 54 HP Twin carb 1600
Can some one shed some light on the R designation after the number.
Thanks

Re: 53 Year old Barnfind, running.
Good luck with the 1967 rebuild Tim. Are you going to replace the thermostat mechanisms ? - presumably the previous owners took it out. Paul P A few hot whiskeys might help you out, if that is your favorite tipple - you must be very near the Tullamore Dew Distillery ?! Ha,ha. Thanks. I am more of a...

Re: 53 Year old Barnfind, running.
As the 72 fasty is now a rolling resto with minor bits to do, I have removed the engine from the 67 variant, to get it ready for a nice winter project on a rebuild. Out and stripped down, and its all great so far. I found it odd that there was no thermostat, and no thermostat support frame, bracket ...

Re: Timing marks on 1972 - twin carbs - auto
Lots of info on samba for this.
Of course you could go old school and set number one for top dead centre, and then chark the pulley mark when you have, this clears up any doubt.

Re: New Front discs
Got the dics fitted this afternoon. The old discs were 8mm, the new ones were 11mm, and that 3 mm was some tough fit. On both calipers the pistons were pressed right into the caliper, all 4 which I checked and re checked. But getting on the pads was bloody tight. I ended up leaving out the gasket be...

Re: Twin Carbs.
I have another set on the 67 squareback. But I am trying to source a suitable rebuilder at the moment. So it might be quicker for me to find a new dual carb supplier fro a new set. Then I am under no pressure to get the rebuilt set fast, I can wait.

Re: Twin Carbs.
Thanks, I was thinking of getting my own rebuilt as well, and maybe buy a new set of carbs to run in the meantime. I dont want my car off the road for months while the existing are rebuilt, thats why I want an off the shelf alternative too. When i get my own back, I will switch the new alternatives ...

Twin Carbs.
Just wanted to know whats the best carb setup you guys are using for a 1641cc engine.
I am currently running a pair of stock carbs that are running very well. But I was just curious if anyone else is running an alternative setup
that they find good.
Thanks

Re: New Front discs
When the discs are done I will be starting into the variant. Plan is to take a few compression readings of the variant, and then pop it out and into the workshop for a nice project in the winter months. Now that I am officially retired on the state pension, I have loads of time to occupy my self in ...

Re: Heated rear window.
Problem for me would be transport of the glass too the emerald isle. I can buy any amount of complete heated glass, but the shipping is a problem
If I could get a film element kit or something, that would be great. I might also send of a set of carbs for a rebuild when I find the guys details.

Heated rear window.
I am thinking of a heated rear window for my fasty. Is there a solution available to fix to my existing window, or do I need to purchase a new window.
New windows might prove tricky enough to get shipped, I am not sure yet because I have not done any in depth looking at the moment.

Re: New Front discs
Got a great spin out of the fasty today, after the hassle with the points earlier in the week. Balanced the carbs as well, and just need to dial in the volume screw later in the week. Its going like a watch now, and starts nicely hot or cold. Nice when a plan comes together. Its only got about 3oo m...
