Re: Distributor
I changed back to Points. Genuine VW Points from The Genuine VW Audi Parts Shop on eBay. Took the Carbs off. Blanked off the second vacuum connection, on the left carb, because that diaphragm had failed on the dual vac unit. Set the throttle stop screws up as per Haynes Manual. Put the Carbs back on...

I finally got around to re building my Original Type 3 Pierburg Fuel Pump. I mean the one that was on the car when I bought it in 1988 ! I used a " German Quality " Repair Kit I bought from Custom and Commercial about 8 Months ago. All seems O.K. Tested the Valves by sucking and blowing. Suction ( I...

Re: cooling and heat exchangers
Get back to the set up of Original Silencer and Heat Exchangers if you can. Not easy to get a new Silencer these days but worth it if you can. I tried an aftermarket Bugpack one for a while years ago then changed back to Original. The flexible hoses from the Fan Housing to Heat Exchangers were alway...

Re: Pan/shell seperation?!
Yes the Body has been off my 1972 Type 3 Auto Variant but I did not do it myself. The man who did it for me had 2 lifts. He lifted the Body off on one of those lifts with 4 arms, leaving the Chassis Floorpan on the floor then rolled that onto a normal drive on lift. That way he had access to work on...

Late Type 3 Fresh Air Box Repair
Has anyone got a good, permanent fix for the Late Type 3 Fresh Air Box please ?
Mine was repaired by welding. Then the bottom panel under the dash went, and had to be repaired. Now the Box under the Bonnet is breaking through again.
Any ideas please ?

Re: Fuel pump rebuild kit?
VW Classic Parts say they have 111 198 555 Kits in Stock. No idea why that would be any different to 311 198 555 but noticeably neither of these include the Valves, Rocker Arm, Shaft, Clips etc. They only comprise of Diaphragms and Gaskets. I asked where the Kits they have were manufactured. They sa...

Re: Fuel pump rebuild kit?
That looks like what we need.
However I have now successfully drilled the 2mm hole in one of my old pump spindles ( i.e. straight and central ).
Looking for M 2.5 Tap, matching thread Screw, and big washer. Plus the 0.5mm Viton Rubber Sheet for the Diaphragm.

Thank you. It is a Type 3. The connecting shaft does move but nowhere near the 90 degrees I was expecting.
The Thermostat looks pretty much expanded when cold, so perhaps it is already in Failsafe mode ?

Engine Cooling Flaps / Linkage Seized ?
I think my Cooling Flaps have seized ( lack of use ). I had a look yesterday. Got the engine thoroughly warmed up. My mark on top of the connecting shaft did not move at all. Tried to turn it with some long pliers. How far should it turn ? I would expect 90 degrees from Shut to fully Open ?
