Re: Not firing on all cylinders
There's ethanol in all pump fuels, Tesco Momentum achieving its higher octane from ethanol addition. You should make sure that your fuel lines are suitable for todays fuels. It's a bit of a lottery, you can buy fuel hose with all sorts of claims and it'll rot quickly because it isn't what it says on...

Re: Not firing on all cylinders
Well done another issue resolved.
You might want to consider treating the fuel system with a cleaner. Forte is my go to - based on independent advice from two specialist garages. Alternatively fire the car up regularly and enjoy the sound

Some bedtime reading for you before your mechanic friend comes on Sunday :) http://p914-6info.net/PDFs/D-Jetronic.pdf Don't worry about the manual being for the Porsche 914, it's the same basic system. You might want to edit your profile to show your location, it's not unknown for people to help in ...

Re: Not firing on all cylinders
The joys of building an older car :) First I suggest you need to establish whether the it is a fuel issue or an ignition issue. Use a spare plug, connect it to each of the right hand side plug leads in turn, earth it to the fan housing/ crankcase as appropriate and with the help of an assistant to c...

Have a read of this thread.... the subject has been covered before and there are some useful links. If the car's not needed as a daily dfriver then I would go the refurb route

Re: Help!! Oil cooler is leaking
Good to hear :), even better when everything is finally back in place. I was wondering how you would do 5 ft lbs, I wouldn't have thought that was much more than hand tight. I would be thinking about adding a dab of loctite, just to make sure they don't loosen unintentionally, cue rapid oil loss and...

More experience over on samba, only 5 ft /lb, too tight and they distort & leak

Re: Help!! Oil cooler is leaking
If I were in your shoes I would check the seal sizes against the oil gallery holes. Assuming one of them doesn't match, only you can decide if you want to wait until you have the correct ones or modify / bodge the ones you have as a test. I would also do as Peter suggests and by measuring the instal...

Re: Help!! Oil cooler is leaking
Just noticed the measurements you have made. Given the seals are the same for feed / return, I would have thought the casting sizes would be the same. Is it possible someone has bored out the feed side in an attempt to give more flow ? In which case standard seals aren't going to work. Without an of...

Re: Help!! Oil cooler is leaking
It''s 35 years since I rebuilt a type 4 engine, yet everything looks very familiar for the type 3. The correct part number is I believe 111 198 029 or 021 117 161 A, depending on engine number, I seem to remember them being the salmon pink. I don't think there's any great secret to mounting the seal...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
That's great news, and thanks for the update - we always like to know how things have turned out. :) I wouldn't worry about the bulb, probably just age. Type 3's seem to have lots of charging issues, maybe because it's a dynamo rather than alternator. Start off checking the voltage on the battery wh...

The cold start valve only operates when the starter is cranking, the thread below has some good information, and a useful link to a D-Jet manual http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=11125&p=59754&hilit=cold+start#p59754 Glad to hear the tank is in good condition  Ha...

Re: '73 Fastback Project
I've been reading the last few posts. The reluctance to start and rev would have me checking the distributor and ignition timing first. Make sure the advance / retard is working and not jammed, then make sure that the timing is set correctly. Static at first, then with a strobe if you have access to...

Re: Type 4's on TV
Just saw another one this morning in the opening titles to a program called "Lucky Feller". I had never even hear of the series before, starring David Jason. I left it running a bit as there's lots of early '70's cars. the 412 can be seen through the rear window, looking to overtake. Not me driving ...

Agreed - I was about to make the same comment, ride height comes from the springs / torsion bars alone, unless self levelling dampers are fitted.

Why not put some decent penetrating oil on and allow it to soak at least overnight, then try before you drop the engine ?

Re: Dizzy problems
Then I would be looking at the wiring diagrams, and in particular the ignition switch. It's possible that something internally has gone wrong in the switch.
Otherwise ensure the connections to the switch are as required - there are a number of wiring diagrams available on this site

Shame about that Chino, you were missed though a couple more cars were on the stand. Hope you got Kate's car sorted out.
I thought Tatton was a pretty decent show, though not on the same scale as Harewood

On the alternator front you should be able to source a replacement or get yours repaired by a specialist.
You could try a wanted ad on here or search ebay / samba for a replacement head
