Bloody hell! Never seen on that bad. Please dont throw the old case away, Im sure its repairable, and the original cases are much higher quality than the originals.

Re: Main bearing question
Do you have the proper equiptment or measure the case and crank? If not it might be worth investing or going to a machine shop and having the new parts properly mesaured too. As a guide, number 1 bearing, if you press it into the case, you should be able to lift the case by it. If you cant then the ...

Re: Main bearing question
They will just supply a set of bearing that match the measurements, assuming that your case and crank are within wear limits. As I say part numbers arent really relevent. Its more important to get the correct size parts, the part number could 123456789 for what it matters. Out of curiostity, why are...

Re: Main bearing question
Bearing wise I wouldnt shop by part number, you need to measure the crank journals and case bore to find out if you current parts are fit, and what size you need.

The port is on the left hand carb. halfway up. Hopefully yours has a blank on it. Otherwise you'll need to set the carbs up again as theyve been set up with an air leak.

Re: Fuel pipe
Why the Filter ? There’s a Filter in the Fuel Tank Outlet and the Mechanical Fuel Pump. The filter in the tank is very course, as these tanks age they rust and that can easily bypass that filter. It then also depends which pump you are running. My original pump died years ago and I have a non servi...

Re: Electronic Distributor Replacement ?
You will have been looking at petronix. Yes it should have Vacuum advance. It sounds like someone has fitted a 009 to yours. The coil isnt a service item as such, are you refering to the condenser by another name? Changing the points and condenser is a good idea.

The great thing about this is, it still reads the vacuum and modifys the curve to suit.

Re: Electronic Distributor Replacement ?
Pro is theyre maintance free, other than checking the timing when servicing. A better stronger spark. Con is, if it fails, its a black box, you throw it away and buy another. If youre at the side of the road there is no fix. Unlike the old points and condenser which can be replaced and off you go. I...

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
I havent forgotten honest, its just the car keeps on going. The engine is absolutely toast. The oil pressure light is always on at hot idle and the start up knock from the big ends grows ever louder. None the less ive put about 1000 miles on the car this year, days out, lunches and a recent weekend ...

That car is looking very well, it looks as good now as it when you first posted it. Holds its own against the machinary you park it near. Do you take the front plate off for shows? Or just run with out it?

Re: What distributor??
Ive never fitted anything new so cant comment. Pros and cons. Electronic ignition requires no servicing. And claims a stronger spark. Negative is, if it fails all you can do is replace (if you carry a spare at the road side) or wait for recovery. I had one fail and it was pain, id rather thave just ...

Re: What distributor??
Any of the gemeric Vac ones that the usual suspects sell would be an improvement. If you want more original. 311-905-205L is a fairly common one which will work well with twin carbs. In period it was replaced with VW 311-905-205AB, Bosch 0231 163 008 > 311-905-205AC, 0231 163 018 VW 311-905-205G, Bo...

Re: Max advance setting
Take the pipe off at the distributor end and block. You dont set max advance, you set the timing with the engine at idle. With out knowing the number we cant be sure. Depending on which it will be set between 5 and 10c BTDC at idle. The weights and vac can then take care of the rest for you.
