Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic

almost finished this section off, looking OK but not quite how VW did it 43 years ago!! I took my time and ground all the welds down that will be visible when finished.. just one piece to make up that sits at the front and joins the rear valance. I also need to make up a bumper bracket section but t...

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic

after a bit of poking around and 5 minutes with an angle grinder and hammer this is all that's left! I'll cut the bottom part off as well and start from scratch, just bought a metal folder so looking forward to having a bit of a play  http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y172/19mark70/innerwinggone...

Re: orange fastback

looking very nice, I just started rebuilding my air boxes and it's a bit of a nightmare figuring out how it should look! (badly welded in the past). what are the small rectangular ducts for at the bottom that lead to the engine bay? mine appear non existent!

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic

spent a few hours today welding in 5 small plates on the front inner wing area, turned out OK after I ground the welds flush and seam sealed it all off! there's something quite satisfying about seam sealing after a hard days graft!! http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y172/19mark70/419466_1015051114551...

Re: Removing IRS spring plates (with subframe removed).

managed to get them both off without much fuss! at rest the spring plates sit exactly at the bolt hole pictured (good rebuild reference point!), not sure if this is stock but the last owner said it was stock height at the rear.. I noticed a marking on the end of the torsion bar, does anyone know how...

Re: Removing IRS spring plates (with subframe removed).

Thanks for that tip, never thought of that! thought I could do a nicer paint job with them off and replace inner bushes at same time, I don't like cutting corners..

Removing IRS spring plates (with subframe removed).

OK, in hind sight I should have done this job before removing the subframe  is it impossible to release the spring plates off the stops at this point? also what's the best method of finding out where stock height is with the splines? as far as I know it's stock height but need to get this righ...

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic

nice one, will check them out, actually power washed them today and they cleaned up quite well, I have some 2pk black so might just do a few bits and see how they turn out! I seam to be spending days just finding out the cheapest places for parts, they vary wildly in prices from different suppliers,...

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic

stripped the subframe down to the bare bones this weekend, one of the cv joints fell to bits! I take it if a cv joint is that worn it will come apart very easy? may as well replace all 4 because I intend to do this once so will replace as much as possible 8)

Re: 1st time T3 engine removal question (simple really)

Take care of the front gearbox mount - I believe the autobox mounts are very hard to find. We may be luckier with our climate, and generally lower mileages, but certainly I've heard they're hard to find in the USA. I know that now  the mount is slightly split, if I can't find a replacement th...

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic

pulled the engine and auto box out today, went pretty well apart from the auto box mount is slightly split, this is most likely my fault for not knowing about supporting the transmission  . if anyone knows where I can find a replacement give us a shout! one of the engine mount rubbers has also...

Re: 1st time T3 engine removal question (simple really)

yes, pulled plenty of bug/bus engines but never a T3! it's out anyway now and it is cv jointed but I didn't support the gearbox (auto), oh well it's getting the full treatment anyway so all will be inspected and renewed as and where necessary..

1st time T3 engine removal question (simple really)

I'm about to remove the stock engine on my Fasty that currently doesn't run and just wanted to know how high I need the car jacked up to remove the engine? can't use ramps as like I said it's not running just yet.. Thanks...

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic

she's al settled into her new home now, very pleased with her. only welding it requires is the rear inner wings and near subframe area, will pull the engine and box strip the subframe down (IRS type) and send it for powder coating whilst I crack on with any welding required. once that's out of the w...
