Gaskets, carb to inlet manifold, and manifold to engine

Post by Wireless » 13th April 2016 - 1:00pm

In the middle of changing the oil cooler on my 73 Squareback... what a faff.

Anyway, suffice to say, carburettors are off, distributor, generator, vacuum pipes for the dual port engine manifolds.

On taking off the carbs, there seems to be more gasket under my nearside carb than the offside one, which gasket do I need, the diagrams at VWISPWest are helpful but there appears to be no difference in these gaskets, so do I still need the DP 341129795 gaskets? If so, is there a UK Supplier?

I've also just taken off the nearside inlet manifold and found nothing in the form of a gasket between the head and the manifold, just a recessed groove. I'll admit at this point not looking at Haynes (pfft), on closer examination, its just missing.

Further examination

As I understand it DP 341129795 is the insulator for DP engines, mine are in good condition, but I still need the standard SP 341129799A Gaskets as these are also fitted to DP engines.

I replied on facebook already, but to save anyone else diving for their parts book....
The paper carb to manifold gasket and the metal manifold to head gasket are both in a standard Aircooled gasket set.
I'm going to say that both, but I know at least the metal one is the same as Beetle / Van.
They're definitely in there anyway, I used them last month.
The 795 part is the insulation piece between Carb and manifold to (help) stop the carb getting hot and the fuel evaporating from the float chamber.

In the end I bought five A4 sheets of 1mm gasket sheet, and made my own.
