Headlining a Squareback

Post by Jared1969 » 12th February 2018 - 8:28am

Hi all

I get my 71 Squareback back tomorrow and first job for me is to put the new headlining I have in. There is no instructions etc with it.

What is the correct way to fit or are there any links to out there that can assist.

Thanks

Take all the rear side windows out and the windscreen
Fit the headliner rods to the headliner and attach to roof
centre the headliner so you have equal amounts of material at the sides and front to back.
Car in a garage - leave a fan heater in car until the headliner material is warm to touch (flexible)
Use strong impact adhesive on the top of the front screen mounting surface - glue about half the length (you can do the corners later)
Use about 50 small bulldog clips to hold the headliner glued to the top of the front frame
Leave overnight.
Next day - same deal with the fan heater - youll need a friend for this bit - glue the rear of the headliner to the hatch opening (whilst strething the warm headliner material) - fit another 50 bulldog clips to the rear and leave overnight.
Next you do the front and rear corners using heat and bulldog clips
Then do the rear sides, centre and front door areas.
When the material cools if shrinks and settles
Avoid any wrinkles in material.
I have some pics on my build thread if you search for my posts - good luck
very satisfying job but you cannot rush or do it in the cold - I bought around 200 bullldog clips on eBay - they are a lifesaver

Thanks mate have windows coming out as replacing runners so makes sense to do all at once. Found your threads but couldn’t access pictures not sure if too old. Don’t know if you can attach and send to me or add to this thread. If not don’t panic it’s sounds self explanatory.

Cheers

Jared
