Parts Availability

Post by purplepeter » 7th November 2008 - 8:10pm

Following the discussion at the AGM,& a subsequent chat with Dave,I'm starting to put together a list of parts & suppliers

So,Please could everyone mail me details of what parts theyve bought recently from which suppliers
Obviously, please dont all mail me to say GSF sell spark plugs, but something like "gsf no longer stock helphos valves" would be usefull
For the moment,i'm intending to restrict this to uk based suppliers

The second part to this,is that it would be helpfull if people could give details of what theyve got in terms of nos components, that could be used as reference for dimensions...so,for example if you were looking for new wiper spindles, you could refer to the list, which would tell you that i've got a pair,& i'd be quite happy to supply you with dimensions/drawings/photo's to assist you with your search
This side of the list is purely & strictly intended for reference purposes-youre not gonna be inundated with offers/requests to purchase

Cheers,

Peter

Ha!
If you want the list of offers of dubious pharmaceuticals, then its quite a long list!
If you want the availability of parts,& nos references, then its a big fat ZERO !

P.S. They also do the Repair Kits and Stainless Steel Pistons separately but the Exchange Calipers look like new so at those prices why bother ?

The original paper elements are hard to source. They don't appear to have been a size common to other cars. As always for Type 4 stuff, give Jane and Bryan a ring on 01303840374 (workshop) or 01303840241 (house) to find out what they use instead. You can be sure they don't scrap a Type 4 for want of an air filter!

If it is the hard to find round one then I found an alternative to it, I'll try and dig out the info.

Found it, Fram CA662PL which fits the Renault R4 and the Fiat 1100/103, 124.

Fitted one to my 412 and its been fine. Probably need to think about finding another one soon or see if I can retrofit an oilbath one which negates the need to source paper filters

The Type 4 oil filter is a standard part obtainable from any motor factor, Halfords, etc.

I still have an open mind about this. The original Beetle caliper for 1972 was stated to be a 311 part. The current replacement calipers supplied for Type 3 '66 to '71 are Brazilian and I'm assured have a piston which is 2mm smaller diameter than the original. You wouldn't want to replace just one as you would get different amounts of braking on the two front wheels. With a certain pressure in the front circuit, the force on the brake pads would be more for the cylinder with the larger diameter piston.

They are the same fitment, but that doesn't actually mean they are identical internally. I really would like an answer to this, but am reluctant to pull apart my replacement calipers just to answer the question about the piston diameter!

Are yours pulling towards the side that you've not replaced?
Dave.

was onto Brake international today for calipers, none in stock, you have to send your old ones to them for recon, 7 day turnaround, price unconfirmed .

local factors looked through the books and called suppliers but no luck, there doesnt appear to be any available in the UK,, ( likewise with Mk1 Golf)

I can understand why Golf 1 calipers are thin on the ground. The earlier Type 3 with 60-odd mm bolt spacing also fit disc-braked Beetles. I would expect there to be supplies of those around, but I guess even those are reducing in number now. The later Type 3 with 75mm bolt spacing are hard to find - if that's the sort you need, it would explain the difficulty.
