Another Type 4 appears!
Looks pretty good in the picture above.
Have you heard that we want a big Type 4 line-up at VW Action this year?

thanks for the welcome guys. im afraid its not a new discovery, i bought it from melanie, t4mel on here. its down on the typ4 4 map, but as a 411???
ill definately be there at action, so i dont see why not! My bay is going soon to generate some house deposit money, so at least ill still have the 412 to attend shows in
Re: new member, hello!
Great stuff,
Welcome
I knew Mel was gonna sell this eventually, but never knew if it was a 411 or 412. Go to the google map version of the map - it is far more up to date, including your new 412 living in Hyde!
You'll learn a lot from owning her. It's nothing like a beetle!
Seeing this moving has renewed my enthusuasm for getting my 412 sedan moving again.
We're trying to get a load together in one place this year at least once!

Dont listen to him it is a lot like a beetle!! Well, you will will learn to alternately love and hate it like all old VWs, beetles, buses, type 4's alike!
Seriously - it would be great to meet up, a big line of 4's would be brill. I reckon Stamford Hall could be good?

Re: new member, hello!
cheers kieron, im actually in didsbury, south manchester, but dont worry about changing the map! its certainly an interesting motor, and i kind of like the way it sits midway the vw design ethos of the 50s and 60s, and shows signs of the companies change of direction in the 70s and towards the 80s im looking forward to getting stuck in to it! plans this weekend are tune and fettle, fresh underseal, plusgas/crack off all suspension fixings in anticipation for lowering and have a good poke around underneath....kps70 wrote:Great stuff,

next weekend, (after ive been paid ) , wheel hunting at dubfreeze, and discrete sterio installation. i want to try and preserve the interior as much as possible. on a similar note, the car will be getting lowered, but i would rather not chop the original springs, so it can go back to stock if required.... i have read that e30 beemer springs are the correct dimensions, is this right?
cheers guys

oh, and no pics till the weekend im afraid, its dark when i leave and dark when i get home at the minute!
Re: new member, hello!
For lowering advice, both good and bad do a search on the shoptalkforum (the 411/412 forum) as there is loads of info on there. There is one car in particlar that details the use of BMW springs and other mods to improve the handling.

Re: new member, hello!
a few better pictures as promised, a little later than planned. ive got it running sweet now, tidied a few bits, new fuel lines etc, and im enjoying running it daily! fuel consumptions a bitch though!
these should be winging their way north by now as well
a more few questions, wheres best to look for rear wheel cylinders and gearbox mounts? are they even available?

Re: new member, hello!
Rear wheel cylinders are same as Type 3 rear (as are the driums) - GSF does the wheel cylinders.
Try Jane and Bryan Terry 01303840241 (01303840374 office) for Type 4 stuff - if they haven't got it, they will probably tell you where to go..... to get it, of course!

Re: new member, hello!
I have only filled it up once because it costs a fortune and the filler pipe leaks petrol smell like mad. All I know is that it is a hell of a lot less mpg than my bug.

Depends on how enthusiastically you drive it. There's no point in tickling the loud pedal with a feather!

Re: new member, hello!
Short winter journeys are the least economical. I used to get 18mpg in winter on a 1600 Camper around town, and even my 30hp Beetle only did 25mpg (with lead right foot!).
Dave.
Re: new member, hello!
On a good run I can get close to 30 mpg and I'm probably averaging around 20- 25 mpg.
Not as economical as the Golf but lots more smile factor (although the Golf is a Gti and is fun in its own right!!)

Wow - 30mpg! Is yours manual or auto? I'm guessing these are motorway miles.
Mines a 1700cc - what is yours shawn?

Mines a 1700 manual with the original D jet FI.
A while ago I went to Stanford Hall from home and discovered that on a full tank I could get just under 300 miles before I glide to the hard shoulder of the M23 and have the embarrassment of tipping the spare 10l can of fuel into it. Therefore, as the tank holds 11 gallons and it was just under 300 miles I make that to be close to 28 mpg. Bearing in mind I wasn't deliberatly driving to maintain a high mpg and the car was loaded I thought it was quite good.
Since then I've managed to squeeze similar distances out of a full tank and made it to a garage and put just about 50l of fuel into it, so 30mpg is possible depending how heavy your foot is
