M codes

Post by Tris. » 30th September 2011 - 2:53pm

I got my birth cert for the Square through this morning :D (Deffo original engine 8) )
The car had these options/extras M 002 and M 454 but they cannot be identified...
Anyone out there have any idea what they may have been?
Its a US spec car if that makes any odds.

I can't find those on the list either. Dealers put certain things on the cars on arrival in the USA, so it may have been a spec for adding by the dealer. Air con? Roof rack (through bolted?). Are the other M-codes there and identified?

M 002 is listed as "US Equipment", but I have no idea about 454.
A couple of Birth certificates I recieved for RHD Notchbacks also had an M code that I could not identify using my parts books or the list on Samba.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/mcodest3.php

I thought they might refer to a combination of options or maybe a trim spec that the importer chose to order, but didn't fall into any of the official codes, i.e neither car I refer to was fitted with a central rear seat arm rest.

Also I think you'll find the M codes were the same across the model range, so you may find it looking at a Type 1 or 2 list ( its not on Samba though - I checked...)

Thats strange Mike, I dug out the original bill of sale for my car, it shows the options as 002 and 454. It states 454 as US spec, but doesn't say what 002 is. It was a "Tourist" car. (US peeps could buy a car, have it delivered anywhere in Europe, do a tour then ship the car back to the states) as you may know.

Maybe the 2 codes mean US Spec tourist??

Very interesting. I would love to have some history like that with any of my vehicles.
I really don't know then. Could the 454 be something to do with the tourist delivery scheme?
Whatever it was it was charged as an extra.

The '920' isn't a charge. It's not included in the totalling, or written as currency. The letters in front 'WGHT' could mean weight, I suppose. 920kg sounds a bit too light, but maybe the short front was less. I'd have to find my old info to check - I think the figure on the website is for a later model.

M454 says 'US SPECS.' on the bill of sale. I would assume that included things like laminated screen, sealed beam headlights, as those were normal on USA cars - I'm not sure what else was. Side marker lights? Working on £18,000 as a typical cost of a reasonable spec Golf, $55 would represent about £500 in today's money, so it might stretch to front belts, I suppose. Our US friends might know when they were required.

This is all supposition - and platinum leatherette was extra, but over what, black, maybe?

Edited: D'oh, the colour code 141490 simply means 14 body, 14 roof, 90 upholstery. Factory code 14 is VW Blue, as stated on the bill of sale anyway! The USA tourist purchase scheme allowed people from the USA to buy a car in Germany, ready to drive round Europe and ship back to the USA, with all the required items fitted to comply with the USA regulations.

Hello friends, I´m quite sure that the M454 option are the Riviera aluminium wheels
