Hello serious newbie

Post by Boardpaul » 21st February 2013 - 1:12pm

Hi guys n gals,
Thought I best register as I'm in learning mode. I've just ordered a square from Oz that's going into a shipping container next week
Current aircooled experience extends to buying a 65 beetle for the girlfriend, driving it home then giving it to someone to work on.lol I'm hoping to learn and do more on this project myself. At the minute my knowledge is just very limited. I've fancied a square and when this one came up I couldn't resist.

It comes with an engine, but this is untested so will need checking and maybe replacing. It also needs a headliner at some point and to get the plastic mirror swapped off.

Apparently it's got Ambon fans whatever they are lol.

Initial thoughts are when it arrives get it on the road ASAP, then lower it and long term I would like to look into a performance motor, maybe a type4 turbo..... But that's down the line.

Thoughts, comments, advice......

Welcome along! Good solid looking square you have there.

Ambon fans are perhaps ambulance fans, they were a factory option and boost airflow to the windscreen. You will likely find a knob on the dash to control this. My fasty (same Dulon/dulux colour) was fitted with this option and also had an eberspacher.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm very happy with the buy. I'm now just trying to look into what I need to do when it arrives.
I've been pointed in the direction of headlining by another member. That's probably all I can order until it arrives.
Need to look into lowering and possibly an engine. It comes with one but its untested so may need another.

I'm purchasing through Southwest Splitz. They have organised everything. Give them a call I'm certain they could help you out.

Hi Paul,
So you've gone and done it then, I take it the van has gone on to pastures new.
You won't regret it, best car I've ever had.

Cheers

Hi Steve,
Yes the van has gone. Though I still get custody.lol the lad that works for me is having it.
Have you decided what to do with yours yet?
I really couldn't say no when it came along, though in reality would of liked and early one.
I'm planning a quick drop, get engine running and track down some camping hinges. (May have a lead on some) seeing as it needs a headliner I may, may, put some lights in and even a split charge.lol it will be more of a camper than the van ever was.lol
Cheers

I will keep it for as long as possible, engines out at the moment, all the tinware is off for blasting and powder coating tomorrow. Still thinking narrowed front beam and air ride but I want to lift the body off really and detail the pan but I think it will have to wait.
I will look forward to seeing yours when it arrives :-)

I just want it on a boat first.lol
In the meantime I'm reading what I can and trying to learn.
Try and collect a few cheap bits to turn it round as soon as possible.

Wow this has been a real long time coming! But it's finally in the Uk, and gets delivered to me Monday. I'm just hoping the engine is in the back of one of the vans as it wasn't with the car :(. Will cross that bridge when it comes to it.

Do you have to have it cleared of black widow spiders etc, or has that already been done? Looks a good basis for a lovely Variint - worth the wait.

Doesn't look like it had an engine in the original pictures either on closer inspection. I'm guessing rear bumper and tail lenses were removed for shipping and are in the car? Looks fairly close to the doors of the container and were perhaps removed as a precaution. Make sure you get them.

No, the engine was never meant to be fitted and was meant to be an unknown entity.
It arrived minus the engine, but they have sourced me another one so it's all good.

Should be here in about an hour :p

Well she's here! First question, how do I get into the filler cap? Not that she will need fuel for a while yet.

She is tucked up in the garage now. Pics are crappy due to iPhone. Will try and get more tomorrow.

Fuel flap release is under the dash on the right - it should be a plastic knob or ring. Pull it to release the flap.

Cheers for that, found it straight away in daylight. The knob part is missing. Just something else to add to the shopping list.
Interior is in a poor state, but I expected that. Body work and everything else seems nice and solid.
Will start a build thread now I guess....

When you get a list of what you need, put it on the wanted ads here - plenty of good original knobs around for the filler flap release, and probably most of what you need for the interior. Oz cars tend to eat plastic interior parrts, so it's not a problem to get them in good condition over here.

Cheers, the first job is to get it running and then go from there. To that end a mate and his dad are round later to see if we can get her fired up.
I will get round to starting a build thread as well.
