tax exemption/ build date
tax exemption/ build date
so with the tax exemption having been extended to the end of 73 now, im wondering if my 74 car will fall inside the tax free threshold, so is there any way to determine build date for my 412 ?
Re: tax exemption/ build date
Hi,
http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/_docs ... engnos.htm
It looks like it would need to be chassis # 4142023434 or earlier to qualify.

Re: tax exemption/ build date
Looks like mine is a way out starts 464 I think
Re: tax exemption/ build date
Starting with 46 means it's a Variant. Third digit 4 means 1974 model year. It's the rest of the number that gives the time of the year it was built.

OK, you now need to look at the Production Plate, that's the smaller one painted body colour adjacent to the big VIN plate. The first three digits give the week number and the day of the week, so you can find the exact date it was built. This page: http://home.clara.net/hallvw/dating.htm (about half way down) gives the interpretation.

thanks will have a look under the bonnet
Re: tax exemption/ build date
If the last digits are 007xxx that's only 7,000-odd and about one month's production, so plenty early in the '74 model year to be a '73 manufacture. If you can photograph that production plate and the chassis plate, I can write a letter from the club for you to submit with your application for historic vehicle class.
Edited: I believe this comes in from April 2014 - I'll check on that. Editor

Interesting, I've just bought a 74 412LS Variant that is supposed to be manufactured in October 73, when I pick it up I'll have to check this out.

Re: tax exemption/ build date
I missed this at the time, that's potentially good news for me too, even more motivation to get my 412LS on the road in time for for Harewood . However I still need to check the chassis plate.
Having done some reading around it seems there was a related announcement that SORN declarations no longer need to be done annually. Having got done for failing to declare SORN a few years ago because a box wasn't ticked when I cashed by tax disk in (even though all the other information was completed) I'm very happy at a return to a more practical approach. I hadn't realised but the qualification for 1973-built vehicles to change to historic class is from April 2014.
"As of April 1st 2014, vehicles manufactured before 1st January 1974 will be exempt from the VED (Finance Bill 2014, as set out in the 2013 Budget, 20th March 2013)."

Re: tax exemption/ build date
Yeah, this I've got to check, since the car was first Registered in the UK on 1st July 1974, it must have stood for a while in storage somewhere.

Re: tax exemption/ build date
Look at the chassis number. It will probably start 46420xxxxx . If the xxxxx is up to 23,434 you have a 1973-built car, and qualify for historic vehicle class = NO ROAD TAX (VED).

Re: tax exemption/ build date
Well it looks as though mine is an August 1973 build as the chassis number is 02xxx, so good news for next year.
I read about the introduction from April next year and then ignored the introduction date in my earlier post in my excitement Without wanting to put a dampener on things, the announced changes are not yet in draft legislation. Fingers crossed

Include the 3" x 1/2" plate which confirms the date of manufacture.
