Post by broady_6 » 31st May 2013 - 10:28pm

I can't see a brush in the holder that's visible - I've asked him if there are any.

The connector is a later style too - not the usual separate D+, DF and earth connections.

I have one sat in my garage collecting dust but I'm a bit reluctant to sell it in case I ever need to put it back to stock.. same with the regulator I have knocking around, you could of had that for peanuts if I knew I would never need it! my alternator set up seems to be working out OK by the way :)

I'm not sure who it was that had been looking. I'm staying stock as its not caused me any issues on any of my current or previous cars. Got myself a couple of spares too!

I don't think that's a good thing to do. The cooling air can't get in if you use a Type1 on a Type 3. The end of a Type 3 is solid, and there's a hole in the underside that matches one in the fan-housing, so the fan drives cooling air through the dynamo. On a Type 1, the fan forces air axially through the dynamo (or alternator) end-plates.

I've also read something on the USA forum about the brush springs not being set up the same on Type 1 as Type 3, leading to rapid brush wear, due to the unit rotating the opposite way. I had to think hard about that, but the brushes are at opposite ends on the Type 1 and Type 3, so effectively the unit is backwards on one compared with the other.

I presume if you are getting charging current, the generator has re-polarised itself. I recall someone connected up a battery the wrong way in my father's 6V Beetle many decades ago. It worked OK, and continued to work OK after the battery was reconnected correctly. I guess the only thing affected was the side of the points that usually got the hollow, got the pip instead. No electronic flasher unit or whatever to be affected on that 50's car.

Hadn't even thought about the cooling ! Haven't stripped the type 3 one yet, hoping its just a broken wire otherwise it's get it rewound or buy a new one. I will want it back for the trekker at some point !! when i've finished restoring it :-)

Sometimes it is as simple as the fact that the pole that the DF wire connects to has been rotated and broken the field coil winding (hence no circuit to provide the magnetic field.

That's assuming the armature isn't burnt out (rewind essential) or the brushes worn down (easy repair).
