Off side mirror ?

Post by SB Jim » 17th June 2013 - 2:08pm

Hi,
I'm after an off side mirror for my 68 Squareback, but I don't want to pay £55 for a flat four one, any ideas. Does a 68 Beetle or Ghia one fit or look the same?

Cheers
Jim

The Flat 4 one would not be correct for a 68 anyway.
A beetle one will physically fit, but the arm is longer than the original one would be.
I presume we are talking about a RHD drivers side here...
A LHD passenger side is different (and I have one of those).

Yes, so effectively its a nearside then.
I have one of those, or a standard late beetle one is as good.
The arm is longer on the passenger side because of the position you are in the car - the short arm drivers side one is obscured by the quarter light frame.
It has nothing to do with which side of the road you are on (you're still looking behind you) although it is much more useful when you are driving on the "wrong" side.

Cheers for clearing that up Mike,

I will just get a late standard one then.

I'm still looking for a nearside (RHD) mirror too but not sure what style is correct for a 68. the drivers side one I have and would like to have matched is the type with a small hole at the bottom.

I have a pair of the smaller ones if anyone wants a pair, they are too small in my opinion but if that's the look you want you know where they are..

Mark.

The correct 68/69 passenger side mirror is squarer and flatter than the late beetle one but has a simular long arm. The drivers side has the same head, but a short arm. Normally Fastbacks and Notchbacks would not have had a passenger side, but they are useful tools in todays traffic...

this was the style I was trying to find, maybe with a longer arm, note the small hole at the bottom!
